Warning to all pilots....

Warning to all pilots, we at Chango Dock have seen a marked increase of Pilots crashing into docking bays, other ships and the Stations tunnel... After a investigation into this matter, we have found a number of docking computers to be infected with a Virus, this will make them act strange. Please report any sightings of the following

Ships trying to do 360 spins in the Station tunnel. standing totally still in the middle of the station only to fly off in a odd angle right into one of the stations bulkheads. be careful when entering a station be on the look out for other ships.....

Kill your speed, not your bank balance.

Just a heads up I WAS In my cobra Mk III doing trade runs only to have my cobra smashed into, this sent me flying into the face of the station and my death.......Needless to say am flying a Sidewinder now.....Please !!!! recall your docking computers ( and npc ships ) and FIX THEM .... faceparm....

I can't help but buy docking computers because the music fills me with nostalgia, but the autopilot fills me with nausea and I *wish* I could press a button to enable it, rather than just slow down. I hate when it takes over. But I do love that music.

What music does it play? Stuff from the Quality Quartet ala Frontier and F:FE?? I'll never buy a docking computer, no point and no fun. But I want that music to play while I'm docking! :(

Don't have a computer myself but will be happy to stand as a witness if it ever goes to trial. I can't count the times I've seen large ships doing yoga smack in the middle of the slot while smaller ships try to squeeze around the sides. The manufacturer should be held accountable for selling such a dangerous and unreliable piece of equipment!

I've seen a lot of comedy docking by NPCs, & had a few close shaves, but the one that took the biscuit was finding a Lakon type 9 hovering low over my allotted landing pad. I just managed to squeeze my Cobra underneath it with inches to spare. :)

The docking computers were clearly 'programmed' by a civy (npc)pilot, and not a member of the Pilot's Federation. They fly about as well as some of these greenhorns who don't understand the concept of 'right of way.' Here's a tip, plebe--my Cobra is a lot heavier and has a lot better shields than your puny Eagle, so if I'm already in the 'slot,' you *wait.*

Honestly, who trained these apes?

Maybe chuck this on in the background while you get on with docking

Blue Danube Waltz btw!

EDIT - Dang I should have read the other posts before proudly barking my Elite factoids! :D Zaphod's link is way better... *Dofs cap*

Ahhhh really, that's not fair. Looks like I'm getting the docking computer.

Or I'll just listen to the .midi files from FF:E :p They do sound a bit... tinny though! Hehe

I think its about 75p at apple store for the single track if you want it. Just set play as you dock on a second screen. but it won't have all the nostalgic scratchiness that the docking computer has.

The Blue Danube has been played in every version of the Elite games when the Docking Computer is activated. It was to pay homage to the movie "2001: A Space Odyssey" (c1968) per the Pan Am docking sequence at the orbiting station above Earth. Even the station looks familiar...

2001 Docking Sequence

I've used the DC on every ship so far and the only issue is that the Anaconda scrapes the roof of the entrance lock. Interesting that the larger Lakon 9 doesn't. The solution is when I am lined up just before entering I increase the throttle to 30 (which turns off the DC), realign and manually fly in. Note that I like the throttle set to zero the engage the DC as if a problem occurs just engaging the throttle gives you immediate control.

Fixing this in programming could be accomplished by slightly raising the centerline of the Anaconda or the ship size values but that might cause other issues with landing and weapons targeting. Nothing is ever perfect. Still it is a good case in point as there will be other large ships to follow.

Running an Anaconda or a Lakon 9 and when needed I can run over smaller ships getting in my way in the lock without even denting the shields too much. So far in my experience the station does not see this as a crime.

I think Docking Computers are mostly for show. They do provide an emotional satisfaction especially for us old timers and even a short break to decide what to do next (like eat a donut or change the channel on the TV :) ). But for serious work manually flying in at hi-speed and using your available heat management resources is much faster, more challenging, and is required if the station doesn't appreciate your career as a Pirate!
