Warning to anyone considering a dk2 on the cheap

Word to the wise on anyone considering picking up a dk2 2nd hand.

From oculus community liaison.. Regarding issues with dk2

"Well DK2 is already unsupported, though working (for the most part). It won't be working forever, but for enough time for developers to continue development before they upgrade to a consumer Rift."

I paid 275 quid for mine a few weeks back and I've already had my money's worth and then some !!!

Elite still supports the 0.8 runtime/SteamVR so even if they nuke support for the DK in the 1.x+ runtimes we should still be good for a while yet

FD closed down a bug report here yesterday with 'DK2 is unsupported', too.

I think that's a bit raw as there is nothing stopping FD from supporting legacy devices. It does still work though bar smearing. [Paranoid] I hope Oculus don't purposefully create a pointless update/runtime that purposefully breaks DK2! DK2 is apparently functionally identical to CV1 so the devs could create VR ready games![/Paranoid]

TBH if someone has the disposable income to by a DK2, at somepoint in the furture they should be able to buy the next version.

I am personnaly in this camp. I bought my DK2 about a month ago for £265 and I am very happy with it. I actually don't feel the least bit inclined to upgrade because DK2 on 1.3 runs so well! Also I will need a new CPU RAM MB because my MB only has one USB3 slot on it! Woe is me ;)

Personally, I doubt the DK2 will go away anytime soon... the official support may be over, but there always remains the possibility of runtime emulation, use of older builds of certain programs, etc. Until the last set's screens have burnt out, there will be people using it in one way or the other.

It's in Oculus's best interest to get as much foot traffic into their store as possible, so even tho it's officially unsupported it'll work for a while yet, especially as the CV1's are being slower to distribute.

My DK1 is pretty useless now other than the odd 'direct to rift' demo and the availability of legacy drivers on the oculus site. I wasn't fussed since I bought something with "development kit" written all over it and I understood it to be a prototype.

There is absolutely no reason why Frontier or Oculus should spend any resources supporting a legacy prototype. It's not a consumer item.

+1

And to add that CV1 and Vive don't ship in some countries....

It was a nice gesture for Oculus to give all their loyal backers a CV1. I guess that will help ease the pain of the DK1 now being all but useless.

I will be upgrading soon, but I'm not going to ditch my DK2. For one thing I wouldn't like to lumber someone with a device with an uncertain future. And also I do believe there's life in the old headset yet. There will be open source drivers to run the thing if Oculus pull the rug from under us.

It might be useful connected to a laptop as a 360 degree picture viewer.

I don't see Oculus killing off the DK2 until you can get a CV1 without a shipping delay, so I'd imagine the DK2 is good until July at least.

And I'm sure I seen a tweet or post from someone at Oculus saying the DK2 will be 'supported' until the end of 2016.

Not supporting DK2 anymore is one thing but for oculus to purposely remove legacy drivers(which already exist so no extra work for them) is another!
Ain't gonna happen anytime soon.
I personnaly am keeping my DK2 and present PC setup as a guest PC while I will still get a CV1/CV2 (along with new PC) for me. In this way I can fly with my gf and make me feel less guilty playing ED/time away from her.
i.e. win/win

I'll keep my DK2 as a collectors item and selling it isn't worth my time, so no worries.

However I'd warn to buy mine. Over 2000 hours of wear, two summers and gallons of sweat having flown through the foam. Stopped demonstrating it to friends after 2014 due to hygienic reasons.

Something to keep in mind before buying a 'hardly used' DK2.

+1 Someday our great grandchildren will walk into the Antiques Roadshow with a DK2 lol.

I found working in a microbiology lab helped.
a good dose of virosol and it was good as new.

Lol - yeah - I never sell used gear. I think I could actually open a small museum starting with a VC20.

Well yes - but mostly if you buy one. I doubt many of the used DK2s on the market have been sold by people working in microbiology labs and even most of those who do wouldn't act as commendable as you did. I used to work in a BSL-3 lab for 3 years to which I still have access and if I had ever considered selling my Rift, I'm sure I wouldn't have cleaned it properly.

Lol I probably would not have either.. However 6 months ago I got a nasty bacterial skin infection on my face. Not caused by the rift but most certainly that exasservated it.

2 weeks later of no rift and some anti biotics it was fine..... But I felt I needed to decontaminate the dk2 before using again. When I came to sell i still had the virosol so figured what the hell.

Tbh this totally put me off the idea of ever buying a pre-owned HMD ;)

My DK2 goes on ebay TONIGHT!!!..seriously.. they're still selling for upwards of $600 used. I'm prepared to go a few months without VR.

I still have my DK1 and DK2 and thought about putting them on eBay as well. I mean, I'd rather have these in the hands of someone else that wants/needs them otherwise they'll just sit there collecting dust on my shelf. But yeah, surprised at how much they're going for above original price.
