Warning to explorers posting images

Hi everyone,

just a short heads up, don't know how many explorers are aware of this - some seem to be, others aren't.

When posting images of shinies while you're en route and still have some time before actually selling that system's data, a lot of people run the picture through an image editor and mask out the system/planet/... names to prevent others from claiming their prize.

This doesn't always work.

When saving that edited image, at the very least, change the image's name. ED stores the screenshots with system name and date, and even though (e.g.) imgur doesn't show that name directly (or in the link) it's still there and can be seen at least as title in the browser tab. The name may even still hang around somewhere in the EXIF data (haven't looked for it).

For me, that means I'll keep my best shinies to myself until I've sold the bunch and have verified my name on them.

it does happen... sadly... why can't people just accept that someone else found it, and shared it... without running there quickly to get first discovery on it... such is life... happened to me with 'the briar patch' oh well... lesson learned... I keep my shinies to myself until I get back to the bubble... maybe then I will update the ELW thread with a heap I have discovered...

ED saves screenshots with the name Screenshot_xxxx.bmp for me.

EDDiscovery converts them to jpeg and renames them with the system name.

Do people really buckyball out into the black to tag something that somebody has posted? or is it the case that both of you discovered it and they handed it in first?

I don't know but if anyone is stupid enough to do that with systems I find they're welcome to them. Generally I only scan a few bodies even in an interesting system - I'm not (anymore) one of these people who scan every last iceball, so there'll be opportunity for other people to tag somewhere I've been.

I would be delighted if I found another one of those green-glowing gas giants, or something similar, but I wouldn't care about getting my tag on it. If I post about something interesting on here (with an accompanying picture of the untagged system and probably posing pictures showing off my golden Asp!) it's pretty likely that I'm the one who found it anyway... :)

I dunno. It's quite strange looking at the names of people who've tagged major catalogue stars around Sol (i.e. tags which were likely taken fairly early in the game history); sometimes the names are familiar, sometimes they're from people who probably aren't playing anymore, often they're names I don't even recognise. Someone was talking elsewhere about how many explorers there are in total, and it's interesting to see in practice so many names that aren't familiar from the forums.

Okay, WHAT? I use EDD every time I play Elite, and I take tons of screenshots with the F10 key, but I've never had EDD do anything with my screenshots? This sounds interesting though, could you please explain more?

There's a screenshot tab that you can set up to make a copy of all your sceenshots in a chosen format and a name that can include details like the system you took them in. Deleting the original is optional.

Captain's Log has the same functionality.

Okay, clearly tonight I need to play around with EDD and learn some things I should have known about for a long time now, lol.

Eh. If someone want's to tag a system before I get back to turn in my data their welcome to it. That's one system out of thousands.
I've come to realize that most likely 98-99% of the systems I tag, will probably never again be seen by another human.

I couldn't give a rat's behind (sorry fuel rats, no offence meant) if a picture I post makes someone to run quickly and try to get the system(s) tagged. Granted I'm still vain and want to tag systems in general (i.e. I've not reached Jackie's zen state about tagging) but when I share photos it's because I find some inner beauty in them and want to share it. If that inspires someone to run for that specific system, more power to them. Big galaxy, 400 billion systems, plenty for everyone.

I have to admit though I want to reach Jackie's zen state. One day. :D

Three little words...couldn't care less.

And heres why...I rarely scan anything within 2klys of the city because thats like messing around in the back yard. After that, the chances of even seeing another players name is very rare, unless yer travelling a documented route to Jacques or a nebula.

But yeah...takes all sorts to make the world go round ^^

I used EDD to this way back (like 10 months or something ago :D) and hit the locking error (that was later fixed) and tried out CL's way unstead. I like the folder naming in CL (not sure if EDD added that?) but I really love the auto imgur upload :D

Back on topic....
It's a bit disappointing if there really are folks that pop off to grab tags. I see that as the exploration version of griefing tbh.
On the other hand.....the first couple hundred tags were exciting but now its neither here nor there....maybe the fact I can't see most of my visited systems due to a bug helps me with the 'meh'.
