Newcomer / Intro Warning! upgrading to the bigger ships.

Having made a decent amount by BH in my Viper, I decided to try my hand at some serious trading.
Traded in the Viper and upgraded to a Type 7. Headed out to Lave to travel one of the rare commodities run.
Everything going fine until I hit Neritus - Toll Ring outpost - to pick up some Neritus Berries.
Docking denied! Even when I was practically on tap of the damn station.
What the?
Finally read the red message at the top left of my screen -- 'No pad large enough.'
There followed quite a bit of high level SF (Space Profanity), until I realised how much worse my predicament could have been if I had neglected to install a fuel scoop and was desperately low on fuel.
I'm guessing there is something within the System Map that will tell you of a station's capability to handle the bigger ships?
Not complaining - just thought I'd pass it on as a warning so others don't make the same mistake.

As far as I know outposts generally don't have large landing pads. Only stations do.

Welcome in big ship country :) As has been said before, usually only stations have big landing pads. I read somewhere that there actually are outposts with large landing pads (can anybody confirm?), but i think there is no way to know that before trying to land.

Since the nerf, many people consider the Python a trade ship. It can carry more cargo than the Type7 and can land at outposts. Although I disagree with the classification. Personally I would maybe classify the Python as a "trader with a lot of teeth" .. it can be pretty deadly in (defensive) combat.

The only "proper" cargo ship that can land at outposts is the T6 I'm afraid

In that case maybe a subtle warning when you actually buy a large ship would not go amiss, and would prevent a certain amount of lost travel time and grief upon arriving?

"Please be advised that you have purchased a ship with limited landing capability! Any future journeys / flight plans should be mapped out accordingly."
Would work for me.

This is the weak point of the much vaunted Clipper. Cant trade with outposts, cant do lots of the missions, cant do clear a FF fine at a local outpost. (It is still better than a T7 and not a lot more money)

I assume you don't hang out on a TS server as you play or you'd almost certainly have been given the warning.

At least you got the new message, in PB I sat at an outpost in my T9 for 15 minutes trying to get docking because I didn't know this little gotcha.

Its a one time mistake!!

:)

Not that you'd assume it but a Python without shields can carry 292t cargo and dock at outposts, even with shields it carries more that a T7.
Use the T7 to get the credits for a D spec Python :)

Pythons are quite capable of kicking some serious butt too for added fun :p

You are right - it is a one-time mistake. It is one though that I think would be better discovered at time of purchase rather than sitting atop an outpost with no way to dock and very little fuel left on board.

Yeah, now imagine the profanity and frustration before they patched in the 'reason' why you couldn't land.

Wasn't always there. See Stu's post...

So, can you transfer cargo from one ship to another when/if you downsize? Without just dumping your cargo into space.

No. Ships cannot be stored with cargo, or otherwise transferred. Sell it, don't dump it in the station

Unfortunately not. Which is why - with 40 plus tons of mixed rares on board - I am commited to stay with the T7. At least until I get far enough away to offload at a decent price.

What about components? Say I buy an Advanced Discovery Scanner for my Sidewinder (not that I would). Can you transfer it to your new ride when you upgrade? Or do you have to sell it and buy another one?

When you sell a component, it stays available to rebuy for a certain time, even if the station doesnt have any in stock. It isnt clear how long, probably until you leave the instance but dont hang about or leave the station, or exit the game.
So sell, swap ships, rebuy (no loss of money)

Currently outposts are not able to handle large ships. It is quite common knowledge, but I understand how new players might have missed that info.
Personally I would love it if a minority of the outposts had the ability of servicing large ships. Perhaps in the future we will see such diversity...

When I bought a T-7 myself I had quite some trouble finding a good trade route in the beginning. But after a few hiccups I earned some good money with that ship. It got me my Clipper.
Currently I am in a Python. After being unable to dock with outposts for quite a while I consider the Python a breath of fresh air. I have really missed being able to access the outposts. One of the reasons I love my Python is that is makes my life a lot easier now I can dock with every station again.
