Warp drive or jump drive?

Hi, the way the frame shift drive seems to work is more like a jump drive. You jump from one location to the other, although through some sort of warp tunnel or hyper speed tunnel at light speed.

But the way it is, doesn't it practically seem as though it is a jump drive or a jump gate? Kind of like an anywhere accessible jump gate? I can't jump to two or three systems away, I have to go system by system as though I were going through a jump gate. Is that really intended? To be step by step to travel?

It's a warp drive, perhaps hyperspace drive. You're clearly moving into another region of spacetime which requires velocity for access and egress.

Some time ago I had someone on here trying to tell me it was based on the Alcubierre drive (which is more of a jump drive but not quite). However, if this was the case, you could make your jump from a standstill (technically being in freefall for the duration of your journey).

You can jump/warp/travel multiple systems provided your drive has the range. If I look in the Galaxy Map and plan a route I can often skip a system with my current range of just over 11 Ly.

Swan > I'm fairly sure the devs mentioned the Alcubierre drive themselves. Anyway they've always explained frameshift by flying at a normal speed while space is compressed around you, allowing you to move faster than physically possible by making your destination closer than it actually is.

The jump animation is just a space magic loading screen, it looks great but doesn't really represent what really happens. A more believable effect would be the Star Wars hyperspace effect. You actually get something like that in Space Engine when you move really fast between star systems (just tried it yesterday, it's amazing).

My theory on the FSD is that for supercruise the shield act like an Alcubierre drive by motvating space behind the ship. For hyperjumps the fuel needed for the jump is dumped into the FSD which drags the destination space toward the ship like the folds of an accordion as it's being compressed, giving the impression is that the ship is moving yet it's stationary.

just upgrade your jump drive. my current jump range is 20ly, so i can jump from aluin to rakapala afaik

it's in any direction and you can skip out systems.

it's more accurately described as a transwarp conduit. - supercruise lets you go at several times the speed of light, but transwarp gets you to a location by launching you through generated wave-folds in subspace at your target, thus explaining why FSD speed isn't constant and gets you to your destination instantly.
