Hardware & Technical Warthog without pedals, anyone doing this?

Hi, I find myself itching to get off the T Flight for something a bit fancier. On a daily basis I am fighting myself not to order a Warthog throttle and stick combo :)

But I am curious about peoples experience of yaw without pedals. My gaming position is not really suitable to plonking some pedals down and I use yaw all the time with the T Flight. What’s your solutions and how does it feel?

Also can anyone confirm that the throttle base switches can be used in ED for things like cargo bay open close or some other functions? I’m sure I read because they are not momentary switches it has a problem?

Thanks

I've been saying this for ages - version of a Warthog with a twist yaw would sell like hot cakes IMO. I'd buy one in a heartbeat. I usually move around in my chair, or just lean back while gaming so using pedals is just not comfortable. There is really no decent high end joystick or HOTAS with twist yaw. They could fill the niche.
Unfortunately I can't answer your questions. But I have a similar problem to yours - I want a slightly higher end stick but not pedals :)

I used the Warthog without pedals for a few years, it's "fine" but not as good as having pedals obviously! You're having to dedicate a finger/thumb and a hatswitch to yaw that otherwise you could use for something else. Plus it's going to be a digital input instead of a more precise analog one, so less accuracy when aiming Fixed weapons.

As for the switches - yeah, it's not ideal. I've heard you can configure it correctly with the TM Target software rather than in-game, but I've never tried. Using the in-game controls, it's a bit awkward - the flip switches only work if the control in question can be set to "Hold" instead of "Toggle". Momentary switches are a different case, obviously.

I've since gone for a Virpil throttle, which IMO is better suited in its control set for ED. It does mean it exceeds the controls-per-device limit so not every button/switch can be used, but it's not a major issue. That throttle though is a whole other price level again.

There's a thread here where someone has a Target script for Warthog that probably would help a lot.

Also a VKB with twist, but that doesn't help with the OPs question... :p

Are you sure you don't want pedals, Bats? I moved from T-Flight X (precursor to the Hotas One) to an X-55 Hotas. Very nice kit and more than enough for Elite, but I splashed out on pedals a little while later- I'm keen on flight sims, too. A rug under my swivel chair sorted out unwanted movement, but there are stronger solutions like rubber wedges or bungees attaching the seat to any available hardpoints. After a few weeks I found myself ignoring the twist, the pedals are really intuitive.

The T.1600 FCS Flight Pack retails for £200 on TMs UK site, the Hog comes in at £370. You could upgrade your hotas and get a set of pedals thrown in for £170 less than the Hog. Just a thought? Or you could go down the Saitek route and get an X-56 and Pro Flight pedals for £350...

I use a CHPro Fighterstick which has no twist and although I use pedals (also CHPro) in flight simulators, I don't like using them "in space". So what I do is assign the pinky-switch of the Fighterstick to "Yaw to Roll" - as a "press to hold" button. That way the stick works as normal and then if I want to yaw I squeeze the pinky switch and now left and right on the stick gives left and right yaw. I also have "Yaw Left" and "Yaw Right" buttons to fore and aft of the mitre (bishop's) hat - so this gives larger yaw inputs for use when not using the pinky switch. Sounds fiddly but in actual fact is incredibly easy to get used to and gives very precise control.

The hog has a similar pinky switch that could be used for this purpose.
