Horizons Wartime surface target scan operation - What to scan?

I just spent an hour flying and driving around the target planet. All I know is that what I need to scan is on the planet, but no idea where. I went to a couple of stations and POIs, nothing.

Mission description:
- Locate the point of interest in the Gendalla system
- Locate and interact with the Datapanel

After a system scan, I got the target body. But no specific location on that body.
So: What POI? What Datapanel?

Thanks!

- go to the body
- after scan you'll see a "searchzone", fly to it
- dearchzone is moving, when you get close
- till it shows "outpost"
- scan datapoint with srv data link scanner. be aware after scan you'll get a trespass, and turrets open for on your ship, so don't park it where turrets can hit it.

Thanks, goemon. Where do I see that search zone? I flew all over that planet, saw nothing special.

EDIT: I googled "searchzone" and found:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lngHErHLZh8
Does not show, though, how he got that search zone to appear.

And this from a forum post:
"I just picked up one of those missions and after scanning the nav beacon it pointed me to the planet. Once I was closer to the planet a search zone was added to my navigation menu under the planet."

I had nothing in my nav menu. Is it supposed to just appear, or is there something I need to do to make it appear?

And then: Outposts usually have lots of datapoints. How do I find the right one?

The search zone will appear as a small circle somewhere on the planet.

You will be able to see it from SC, and it will say search zone : building.

Target that and follow it down through orbital cruise to normal flight. As goemon says, it will move around a bit before it settles on the actual target, which will be a small outpost with a data point to scan.

These outposts are very small and have a single datapoint.

Thanks, guys, I finally made it. Really easy once you know about the search zone. I thought I had checked every possibility. Carefully scanned the planet on the system map several times, which I thought was the logical place to find such info. I stll don't know how I could have found this without you - I'd not have picked up such a mission again.
I'd hope that the mission contact would mention the magic word "search zone" at some point, or that it appears in the mission description. Instead this guy posted me five times about the target body ...

put up a post in the suggestion/feedback subforum with that!

Glad you got it figured out.

The mission details and process are a bit vague on this one, but essentially it follows the steps of most planet based 'search' missions. Go to specified system, scan the nav beacon (or honk a discovery scanner), go to the planet identified by the scan, look for the search zone in SC, fly down to it...

I'm stuck too - DID ALL THAT - landed near a base... went close to two towers - they raised up and started turning. nothing.
can I do this from inside my ship? or must I use a SRV? seems like they wouldn't have allowed me to accept it if I wasn't properly configured?
says interact with datapanel ??? been hovering around a hour and still there - googling it?

Yes, you need an SRV.

When you get close to the data point (the tower that rises up) you can target it, and then use the SRV data scanner to scan it. You will also need to go into turret mode in the SRV, as in normal drive mode, the scanner cuts out when the tower rises.

Going to the nearest outfitter to get a SRV - seems the mission should have said that it was not allowed to accept it without one, I did own one a while back - but had sold it?
the mission never commented about bringing one or scanning with the SRV = (

went back to the station - added a bay and a SRV- heading back to complete mission. (yeah I'm a noob) learned mining, then basic delivery and now doing some more advanced missions.

I'm guessing that it's taken for granted (by FD) that you need an SRV to accomplish surface data point scans...

As with all missions, once you learn the steps they are all relatively easy to navigate, but of course, learning the steps is not always straight forward. :) The wartime surface scan missions are pretty easy, I've never encountered any opposition in them.

Just be warned there is a textual bug in the mission accomplished dialogue that tells you to return to a random (incorrect) location to hand in the date. The correct location is shown below the filler text next to the NPC avatar.

hmmm I'm there I think in turret mode - can't find a scan button. (I'm using a X52 pro that was programmed by someone online who's program I installed and am not keen on all the controls yet. I'll keep working on it. Hardest 65,000 CR I ever earned.

Ok...

The SRV scanner is usually set to the second trigger on the stick. You can check that this is the case by looking in the right hand HUD panel under fire groups (while in the SRV).

If that is enabled, then you will need to look in Options > Controls to see what key / joystick button is bound to secondary fire in the SRV.

got it- appears I had to LOOKUP with the mouse at the access point. - I did both towers in case.
I think I'm good to drop off the data. thanks for the helped, since the texts said NOTHING about scanning with SRV - I'd never would have figured it out.

Glad you got it sorted. You should get a verbal message and a comms message that the mission is completed.

Funny timing for this post as I just did this for the first time last night.
I had trouble targeting and scanning the outpost, until I went and remade my SRV fire groups.
Also, as I was allied with the outpost, nothing bad happened after I scanned it. Turrets remained green.

What I used to do before I figured out which button is the standard scan button in my setup, was to set scan to fire 1 in the firegroups. That worked. But that I had to be in the turret was another thing I only found out by trying.

They didn't shoot at me either. But oddly as I was leaving to return to my ship, I had a hard time finding it. I found another ship I thought was mind and I couldn't get raised up into it. Turned out to be a security persons ship. (landed near me outside the base) ??? odd ??? I looked a bit more and found my ship and left the planet.

1)Normally datapoints in search zones have "public" access mode - so you can scan them without hesitation.
2)Beware, that your ship can be self-dismissed automatically (this happens if the distance between your srv and your ship exceeds ~2 kms). Better to look for it on your radar (green hollow player-ownrd ship) or - better - in contacts. If it not there - just recall it from the bottom panel.
3)yep, "landed" (frequently in a very bizarre way) npc-ships are now "normal" since 2.2
