You will also need to go into turret mode in the SRV, as in normal drive mode, the scanner cuts out when the tower rises.

You can do it outside of turret mode but it's a fiddly annoying process of sneaking up on it and getting the scan going as soon as you get in range - but it was driving me nuts trying to get it right. Trying it from the turret never occurred to me for some reason.
