Elite / Frontier Was the bad quality of the FFE videos intentional?

I understand that Frontier was no Origin, but the videos strike me as bad on purpose, almost like a joke.

Was it a parody of Wing Commander and the other huge FMV games of the day?

The military or that police guy with the goggles for example.. how can this be meant serious?

Come on, the videos were tongue-in-cheek right?

From what I have heard, it was more about cost! There is something out there I read once about all the bloopers with these videos. Certainly they seemed dragged in from the street rather than from a galaxy far, far away!

At least I'm not the only one having sleepless nights about this ;)

Without knowing the personnel and situation at the time, it's difficult to say what the intention with the Bulletin Board videos was.

Sticking my neck out though, I would say the videos were intended to be serious. My reason is that on the CD there are a number of clips where they're clearly being light-hearted/funnee. Therefore, the clips where they're not being funny are presumably meant to be serious :S

That would be Matt Dibb's brilliant assessment of the videos on his Life on the Frontier site :)

The Galaxy is full of nutters

I loved the videos! They had a kind of Hitch Hikers Guide To The Galaxy or a Terry Pratchett kind of style, in that, people doing serious things, but also a bit.............well,................mad too :D:D

So if you think about it, our planet is full of such people (some of them even have their fingers on nuclear launch buttons ), so it does not take a great leap of the imagination to picture the galaxy being full of these people once we become a space fairing species in the future. So 2001 got it wrong, it's not full of stars, it's full of nutters! :p

They weren't made by Frontier, they were made by the Russian crew who did FFED3D. Or do i completely misunderstand the topic?

CDs? I didn't even know you could get it on CD.

So were these actually implemented in the game, or were they just something that was left on the CD and not actually used?

I only played the version that came on 2 floppies.

Oh yeah they were in the CD Version of the game alright... I still have nightmares about them sometimes.

You can download them from John Jordan's site HERE. If i remember correctly wont work with FFE3D though

They were funny though ;)

You're joking, right?

Since years involved with the Elite community and you never heard something about the great FFE videos?

Blasphemy!

I think the vids are just space filler on the CD.
But they are absolutely classics, up there with Team 17 Yorkshire space marines from Alien Breed Tower Assault.:D

The CD32 game Microcosm was another with a dodgy movie. Ah, they dont make em like that anymore...............thank god!:D

By the way, the FFE movies work just fine with JJFFE. Complete package is on the SSC
