Newcomer / Intro Wasn't Paying Attention and Now It's Decision Time...

Got a little too comfortable in my new Cobra Mk3 with a million space bucks and lusting after the Diamondback Explorer I made a mistake:

I read an old post somewhere that said Kopal Orbital was selling Diamondback Explorers so I went!
After discovering there were none for sale, I am informed that I'm outside the Pilots Federation system with no way back in.

Decision is - Upgrade my Cobra for exploration and take my chances in open space
or
Start over and not leave the Pilots Federation until I'm ready

I've only got a few hours into this so there's my dilemma...Any advice would be most welcome.

Thanks All,

Ron1776

You probably cannot buy a DIamondback anywhere in Newbie Space, so f you want tone, you'll have to leave anyhow.

If you've finished all the tutorial missions, there's no reason to stay in there. And if you've already got a cobra III and a million credits, I'd reckon you're ready.

When I started I was in a Sidewinder armed with pulse lasers in a galaxy full of Deadly/Elite Anacondas engineered to G5 across the board and with PowerPlay goodies tacked on for extra bang.
You learn fast.

The cobra is the most versatile small ship in game, decent jump range, decent speed, decent cargo capacity and decent combat capabilities. You are definitely ready.

On a side note, ganking really isn't much of a thing in 99% of the game. I've been playing for years and can count the number of times I've been blown up by any real player on one hand, let alone "ganked".

Just don't let your first experience of open be known "gank" dens like Deciat or engineers systems (as is the recurring trend) and you'll be fine.

Another option is to keep the Cobra, grab more cash, and get a DBx as well.

I, too, made my way without the starter area and lived, albeit not playing in open. Not my thing.

Keep the Cobra - it's a joy to fly in both SuperCruise and normal space.
But you need to get some more space bucks. 1 million wont cut it

If you want to A-Rate that Cobra and get out to explore a bit, get some exploration ranks and some distances from startup place to prepare to unlock some engineers, you need way more than 1 million

This build will cost you close to 6 millions.
Sure, you can use a 4B fuel scoop to save some 2 millions credits, but it will make you less efficient at fuel scooping (not a big deal, especially when you cannot really afford it)

A similarly equipped DBX will cost you more than twice, but you will gain an extra 10-12 ly in jump range

There's no reason to stay in the newb zone. All the nice ships, modules and interesting things to do are outside. You can make 10 mil per hour in your Cobra, just scanning planets, or 15 mil per hour helping the police kill bad guys in high resource extraction site. In half an hour, you'd have enough to buy a T6 and do passenger missions for 60 mil per hour. In a single session, you can get enough money for a fully-equiped DBX to go and play with the Guatdian stuff or start unlocking all the engineers, or go and explore the alien bases and see the thing in the cave. All those things are much more interesting than jumping between stations in the newb zone.

For planet scanning, I'd use this build. There's no need for shields because there's nothing to bump into and that keeps your ship much cooler for scooping. Never take anything you don't need for the task in hand. All it does is slow you down and make your ship run hotter.

If you want to start straight away, you could get a 4C FSD and a 3B fuel scoop and scan your way to a station that sells the 4A FSD and 4B fuel scoop. By the time you get there, you'll probably have enough money, Only DSS water worlds, earth-like worlds and amonia worlds.

Click the "S" at the top right and enter the system where you are to see where to get all those modules.

You're ready now. With a Cobra and million space ducats you're all set. Of course you may want to experience more of the starter content and nothing wrong with that. But I reckon you're ready to cast your lines.

Nothing ventured, nothing gained
Nothing will ever feel the same
You've done your time, it's time to fly
Just ensure you've got re-buy
Venture forth to parts unknown
Perhaps you'll even find a home
There are things to see, and more to do
More than you'll see, if you stay where new
Get a scoop, and a weapon or two
A DSS, and good shields too
The Cobra's fine, you've got the skills
Fly, now, fly, in search of thrills
Of data, credits and bounty kills
The time has come to spread your wings
In search of fun and Elite's best things

I made 17 million credits scanning systems with a DSS on my way from the starter system to Lembava system, when I accidentally got my license to the starter system revoked. In Lembava, I got a 15% discount on my DBX when I was ready to buy one, and got the A-rated modules for my Cobra Mk III for the same discount.

You'd better start engineers as they have discounts till 7th Jan. I.e. things are easier to do now. So don't waste days in starter area.

You probably disguised yourself. :D
