Waste of money to buy VR now?

Part of the fun back in the early days was getting it to work and then seeing how far you could push it! Taking a DK1 apart and changing the screen out for a higher res one was a personal highlight and revelation (riftup).

These days it pretty much is a case of plug and play with a little camera positioning. VR is ready for mass consumption IMO

Love my HMD, glad I got it in September and I don't think the next version is as close as we're told. Some of the 'just-sround-the-corner' HMD's coming out don't even have a working prototype. Even still, i will get the next version too.

There's a huge difference, too, between minimum spec VR and runs awesome VR

I picked up a PS 4 pro over easter weekend. I may pick up a PS vr in the future to complement my rift. A bit sour how much Sony store UK charges compared to US only. 7 quid for last of us and uncharted trilogy on us store

Didnt they say the new acer/leonovo/dell glasses wont supported by steamvr/OC rift hames natively? Thats the big thing for me...

I also realised that with supersampling, (which was impossible with a 970 on most games), the visual quality might improve just enough to not bother me quite so much.

Don't bother with supersampling!

HMD Pixel density is where it is at. People turn down SS so that they can turn HMD PD up!

For Dirt Rally, what did you have the VR setting set to? I love that game in VR. I have the VR camera setting (I cant remember what it is called) set to off, this really softens the experience.

IMHO it's almost there. Current VR hardware is a generation too soon with field of view, comfort, resolution. GPU's need another generation leap to bring solid 90fps VR performance to the setup.

it's still R&D product; may be subject to spontaneus explosions (mind your head!) or can cause eye-cancer! Thanks for testing the product :x

edit: no, honestly, I could test it once at a gaming convention in our city. It really is an awesome experience with the right hardware.

Nonsense. VR with the Rift and Vive is jaw dropping. Monitors, otoh, are all well past it and offer a truly underwhelming gaming experience.

That is not entirely true, while you're right that 90fps is important, the developers could look more into optimising their code better. There are some fine examples (or should I say exceptions to the rule actually) like the new Doom.

And here's an ancient example of what can be done with optimisation ;-) Keep in mind this was recorded on a machine with 66MHz CPU which had no 3d accelerator of any kind and was designed to display side-scrolling graphics and not 3d scenes :D And it would run on Motorola 68020 CPU (20MHz)

PS: FDev... we had planetary landings on an Amiga in 1998! Implement that already! ;-) :D

The only thing I WON'T be doing immediately is to play Dirt Rally. That game knocked me out for 3 days, with dizziness and tiredness. I can't specifically explain why, but it is such an intense experience - even more so than any other racing game I played - it virtually(sic) shut my brain down for a few days. (that's what ultimately made me return it originally).

And with Touch (which I shall buy next month), and the new Async tech, I think that the overall experience is available to anyone with even a reasonable PC (even my poor 970). So I would absolutely try it - buy it from Amazon.. if you don't like it simply return for a refund.

I drove a 1974 Toyota Celica GT for 10 years. When I first tried Dirt Rally in 2D, I felt it's physics were poor compared to the venerable Richard Burns Rally. Then they added VR and I gave it another try. I was stunned at how close the 70's cars were to my RL Toyota in handling. It all came down to now being able to see the undulations in the road. This is now my favorite VR racing title. The graphics are also much clearer than other race titles at the same pd, so a lower pd can be used without much difference. I run at 1.5 on a 980 but even 1.0 looks better than other racers at 1.5 imo. Much of your dizziness may be due to the bouncy, flying through the air driving experience in DR. Smaller doses while building up your VR legs for this game/sim should help. Not to mention that this style of racing can be a lot of work and quite tiring. For me this is a must have title in VR for any racing fan even if your not into Rally.

If you buy Touch from Oculus you get Robo Recall free, which is a great example of what made for VR graphics can look like when natively employed (sweet). Worth mentioning that if you like shooters, the Doom BFG Fully Possessed mod it a brilliant mod supporting Touch and voice commands. It is well worth picking up BFG (often on sale at Steam)

Being a sim player, I never used the Xbox controller and didn't buy Touch initially. When they halved the price, I decided to give it a go. I wasn't sorry at all. These are a great piece of tech and I use them way more than I would have imagined.

Oh and welcome back.

Thanks for replying to me I am sorry I do not know how to insert a link I did get a patch last night that seemed to help with some of the issues. I think I got the EDprofiler to work last night and so the game is playable right now,

I would like to interact with some of the VR users on the game itself to check settings and for both ED and the computer its self.

Again thank you all for replying to me....

Duh.. that's what I meant :D HMD will undoubtedly help with the visuals. As for settings, I'm not sure what settings you mean. I was getting 90fps no bother with some of the graphical settings turned down, so framerate-related sickness wasn't the issue. I think it really was the absolute intensity of it. Careering off a cliff finally done it for me, I had to rip the headset off and go lie down.

I suspect if I just ease myself back into it, play some iracing and corsa, and of course Elite, and just limit myself to how long I spend in a game for a while, I will get my VR legs. I really want to play dirt rally as it was ridiculously good, but I'll just be more careful this time :D

As mentioned above, you're very likely right, it's a very intense experience. I'll just take it easier this time!

I will have literally no use for the xbox controller, as I have both wheel and HOTAS, and I use a PS4 controller if necessary. Touch sounds like it'll be fun for the things I've yet to try.

Oh and welcome back.

:D
