Engineers Wasted materials and commodities on engineers

My main objective is to upgrade my shields o.k nothing wrong in that, little visit to miss Martuk. Reinforced shields grade one fitted. New search, materials found for grade two. Trip to miss Martuk again to fit said grade two shields, oh dear not enough reputation with her, what to do ? fit two or three upgrades i dont want (wasting materials and commodities) just to increase my reputation so i can actually fit the upgrade that i want. I really really love this game but God almighty what is going on, why do i have to do this just to get the upgrade i actually want. F.D give your heads a massive shake.

You can give her exploration data instead to increase your grade with her.

You get the same reputation gain whether you apply the module or not. In fact you get it the second you say go. You can see that by getting the referral message for passing 30% reputation at grade 3 the second you click 'give 'er a spin'.

So find the modules that use up useless mats, do those then do the upgrade you really wanted so you don't waste precious materials. https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=261466

Repped for (almost) telling FD to give their heads a wobble.

Just wait till you meet the Engineers you have to bring rares to. 4 Hours(and 750,000 CR spent) to bring 50 cigars(limit of 12 at a time), and I just unlocked one that wants 100 of some other rare that's limited to 10 at a time? I'll pass on that time wraith. Not sure how sitting for hours in the Commodity window was ever viewed as good content.

WOW! It just keeps getting better and better! lol! ;)

I gave up after my grade 2 FSD upgrade proved to be a total bust. This kind of monotonous grinding is not my cup of tea! When I sit down to play a game like ED, I want to relax and enjoy the experience! Not feel like I just punched in to a second job! :(

I always wondered if the guys at Frontier who come up with these features actually play their own game more than a few minutes here and there during development work. Well... Based on everything I have seen in 2.1, I got my answer.

NO!

You can give her exploration data instead to increase your grade with her.

Is this true , thought she wanted you to use her services to increase reputation, i might be wrong though, it has been known.......on occasion.

So this is actually one aspect I don't have that much issue with - leveling through modding is reasonably quick (3 "current rank" mods to reach the next level). I don't know of any crafting mini-game in an MMO that doesn't have "grinding" of this sort to level up. It's just the nature of the beast. Also many of the things you craft on the way can have a use (might have to do it on multiple ships but alas). Would it be better if you run missions specific to the engineer? Hell yeah! They didn't have time to do that in a satisfactory manner for 2.1, so we got the crafting + alternate way (that I find is usually slower/more effort).

Making upgrades increases rep, that's true for all engineers. You can also increase rep in various ways with each engineer - if they let you sell exploration data that'll help (though it drops off quite quickly); if you can sell commodities, that'll increase rep etc.
