Newcomer / Intro Way to collect items without cargo scoop

Hi folks,

After I kill a pirate they leave behind some engineering items. What would I need to collect those items without using the cargo scoop? I know it is something to do with Limpets but not exactly sure how to use those.

Thanks for any advice.

To make everything (unnecessarily) super clear - You need a cargo rack (optional compartments). Not for the engineering materials, but for the limpets. When you have both collector limpet controller and the cargo rack on board, go to the advanced maintenance in station menu and load up the limpets.
Don't forget to put the limpet controller in your firegroups.

When on site, you have two options
1) target a piece of material you want and fire the limpet. It will go collect that thing, bring it back and self destruct.
2) Fire the limpet(s) without anything targeted. They will hang around and collect anything in their range until they run out of fuel (the lifespan of a limpet is dependent on the rating of your limpet controller).

Side note - if you want to fight while having limpets around, just remember that you need to open the cargo scoop for them so they can deliver the goods, but with cargo scoop open (similarly to deployed landing gear) your max speed is halved and you can't boost.

Yes collector limpets. Mat gathering is woven in to just about everything I do.

This is what I usually use for this, a role I call combat sweeping. Krait II

Poison Whiskey

Class 4 rack for 16 limpets, but I often carry just 10 or 12. The other commanders in our PG have much bigger racks and carry a lot more limpets than I do. Any combat instance ends up looking like a shooting-star gallery with so many limpets out lol. Limpets can be synthesized for 10 iron + 10 nickel, which makes four shiny new ones. So you want a class 2 rack at minimum. Even a class 1 controller and a class 2 rack can be profitable.

One thing to be aware of is when letting limpets run free (not targeting a specific item) they will pick up anything. So you want to begin adding things you don't want picked up to the ignore list. If the limpets deposit a stolen item and you get scanned you might have your hands full, as well as gain fines. Like limpets picking up limpets, or sewing machines or what not.

Letting the limpets run free is the normal way to do this, but it does carry some negatives you need to account for.

If you don't want to install a limpet controller on your combat ship due to other priority modules, you can still pick up items by lowering your cargo scoop and slowly flying into them.

Hi folks,

I think I got the basic idea. Here is what I got. It did work so thanks for getting me on the right track.

  • 1A Collector Limpet Controller
  • Size-2 cargo rack
  • 2 of the limpets from advanced stocking screen

I was disappointed when my limpet only picked up 1 single item then vanish. So I read the comments and I realize I'm not supposed to select the item.

That all makes sense, but I want to make them last forever or else make my own limpets like sinisalo says he does. So now I have 2 more questions if anybody knows these that would be great.

  • How to make my own limpet like Sinisalo after they disappear?
  • Where can I get iron and nickel without driving that car? Can I just buy these items from a star base?

Okay that was 3 questions. Anyway any advice appreciated.

Also here is my ship. I will go back and buy the 4-size cargo rack. I don't know how to get my ship into coriolis. I only have EDMC right now.

PS - I'm not looking forward to telling them to ignore stuff. But I guess there's no such thing as a free lunch.

Iron and nickel are raw materials. You will either need to prospect for them, or trade for them. But to trade you need other mats that were prospected for. These cannot be purchased. Find a planet with both at high percentage and you'll have them in short order if you drive the SRV around. Your rover's already onboard, so....

To synthesize them you use the right hand panel. The synthesis interface is found here. Toggle down from inventory.

Class 2 rack can hold four, so buy four at the restock screen. If you switch to class 4 then you can carry 16 limpets.

If you go in to settings in EDMC you can set your shipyard to Coriolis, and then just click your (current) ship name in the EDMC interface and it will export a Coirolis build. Name it, save it, share it.

make limpet = Synthesise - in Right Hand Panel - Cargo and scroll down to Synth - youll see a list of components, scroll down to Limpet collector and synth it. You get 4 so best if possible as said to have a 2 cargo rack

I think Iron & Nickel can be found by mining but not 100% sure.

hit a Geo site and look for Piceous. Shoot them for G1 mats specifically. But far easier to get some higher grade and trade down from same Geo sites. Yes its in the SRV :) Turn Drive Assist off in SRV, its not Assist its Cruise Control which is only good for long journeys.

You were right about it picking up wrong cargo. I got back to port, it said illicit cargo. I was being scanned but I got out of there before they scanned me.

Now I'm going back. Whew. I guess that was close.

If you can find a Black Market you may be able to sell illicit cargo there. Some arent open due to BGS state or faction status or something but will say 'unavailable' in SysMap station description. If look in Cargo it will say whether its illicit or stolen so you know as soon as you pick it up. Its also in the description in the bottom left if targeted.

If you do sell at BMs youll find it useful at some point in the future.

Scanning - can drop a heatsink or go Silent Running for a bit to break the scan. Avoid boosting as that attracts attention. And the more ranked up with the station owner faction the less you get scanned at all.

Out of my own curiosity, I wonder if I could have sold that stolen cargo on the black market. But then how do I get past the scanners?

Thanks Vetinari I will try silent mode. No heat sink in my ship right now. This station has a BM next time I will try that out.

For now I'm going to say I only need 2 limpets. Using up just one of them the new way lasted a long time for me. I must have shot and killed about 10 ships and collected a lot of stuff. So I am getting rid of the Size-4 cargo and going back to a Size-1 for the limpets. I just need a bigger ship I guess. I have been wanting a Federal Assault ship or whichever one has the biggest guns, but I don't know how to become a lieutenant in the Federation.

For now I have to sell/buy different items in my ship (depends on task) because not enough space.

If the station has a black market (most don't) you should be able to. Apart from silent mode, if your ship isn't too big and it has fast thrusters you could get into the mail slot before they have a chance to scan you.

I see.

In this case I was on a planet. It was the only base with a 1A limpet collector device. I might try it sometime. Hopefully I'll remember all the tricks by then.

but I don't know how to become a lieutenant in the Federation.

If you look at the factions on the BBS board or in the RH panel, you will see 4 different symbols next to their faction. One each for Fed, All, Imp, 'free / anarchy' and some with no symbol. If you choose missions for the factions with Fed alignment symbol you will also rank up with the Fed Navy. When you reach 100% rank you will get a 'Promotion' mission on the BBS to rank up.

P.S Silent Running turns your shields off so be careful landing as you will likely take some damage. Turn it back on just before landing at the latest and shields can recharge while docked.
