Horizons "We choose to go to the Moon..."

Hello everyone,

I was about to attempt my first landing when I noticed that the Moon is not presented as landable in the System Map, while every other rocky/icy body in Sol is. Am I doing something wrong or is the Moon not accessible as a choice from the Devs at this point?

The moon is not accessible because we know exactly how it looks like. FD can't procedurally generate the moon (cheapest and of course fastest way what they do) as it wouldn't look like the moon we know. It would take effort, time, money to handcraft the surface of the moon. That's why it's not in there, IMHO.

The same goes for planet Earth. You can't access it. It would take a lot of effort to design earth. Vegetation, cities (even!), canyons and especially the atmosphere with coulds etc.
The only thing we can access are round balls without an atmosphere. It's easy to procedurally (= cheap and fast) generate millions of round balls that you can access.

They have however said that it will become accessible eventually...they probably want to add some special things to it first due to it's historical importance. Using procedural generation on top of existing heightmap data we have of the moon is certainly possible (that's what Outterra does), but they might not have all of that up and running yet.

I imagine it's likely changed a lot by 3301 due to global warming, expansion, rebuilding, mining, Thargoids etc. I doubt even the continental maps are exactly the same.

Apart from that, 1300 years into the future, both the moon and Earth may look a bit different than they are now. Global warming, rise of the seas, etc. may result in an Earth unknown to us now.

Edit: Ninja'd!! Lol.

You can't land on every dustball out there though. I tried to land on some random uninhabitated ones, but was unable to do so.

I found that going to your Nav Page, use the Filter and set it to the "Landfall planets" option. Then you can quickly and easily see where you can actually land, and set your course there.

Maybe I am overly ambitious, but I would love to see options to build player owned structures on the planet surfaces. For instance deployable mining equipment, erecting a type of warehouse to store it in and maybe expand by creating refinery and so on. There are 400 billion stars out there, with 0-30 planets in each. So plenty of room for player owned buildings or structures.

Anyways... maybe too ambitious... even though I would even settle for a tent for starters...

Ever wonder why we stopped going to the moon? Why were Apollo 18-20 built and never sent? Something is going on there for sure.
Hope that FD can shed some light on this mystery once we get to land there ourselves :)

Global warming is a hoax. More likely Earth has shifted into a ice age in the future.

An American, I presume... For a hoax, Global Warming has been PROVEN" plenty of times, though the Petrochem companies insist otherwise... I wonder why?

+Rep1 This... Didn't work for our masters... weather is not playing along so they
named it climate change... and look closely in all those studies... never factored in our nearest star... all blamed on man-made... can't wait to finally pay carbon-tax to end this climate change...

But yeah the moon will hopefully be accessible sometimes during season 2.0.

+1 on the great idea. Even if they give us all 30-40 planets, I think we can all fit our personal "bases" there and not get crowded!

1. As far as Elite goes, I think you can see Earth from space and at 3301 it's still a water + earth-like world (not in an ice age). With plenty of oceans, land and city lights at the dark side.

2. Neil Tyson explained it best:

There is a movie called Apollo 18 about that. Some grim things happened on the dark side.

It's easy to blame petrochemical industry since it's so visible to see cars spewing fumes as well as the petrochemical industry having the brand as the guilty part in all global warming issues.

Truth is the livestock industry is actually responsible for more emission and global warming than all of the worlds transportation combined.

If someone should get pointed out as the "guilty" part then it's high time the livestock industry which has been lurking quietly in the background gets pulled into the light and held just as, if not more, responsible than the petrochemical industry.

Obviously the petrochemical industry is not innocent by the fact that something/someone else is polluting more. But it is entirely wrong to ignore the largest contributor to global warming simply because they supply us with various food items.
