Astronomy / Space We have a picture of a supernova now!

Supernova 1987A, located in the Large Magellanic Cloud.
Reminds me of the one of many rings.
CAST IT INTO THE FIRE!

ISILDURRRR!!!!

Jumping into system with supernova? .... Well you would realisticly be dead several LY's away, due to all nasty rays and stuff. Supernovas are exterminators :)
But it is fun to thing that the gold ring on your finger originally comes from a supernova a long, long time ago :)

Cheers Cmdr's

I hate to put a dampener on the OP's enthusiasm but ...

There are many, many pictures of supernova remnants.

The rotating image posted is just an animation of a 3-D model of the shock-wave.

The interesting thing about the paper presenting the model is that SN1987A has had a good deal of study since it's discovery and so permitted modelling of the various features of this supernova.

Stars rotate and the spin affects the explosion material's vectors.

Yes!

Question for you: Did it bother you when George Lucas added the ring to the Death Star explosion? It bothered me, the death star wasn't spinning. Even if you make an argument that the core was, the mass of the station would have obscured the ring from us and we still would have just seen an explosion, though it would probably have been asymmetric secondary to variations in density of the station.

More pictures of supernovas does not damper my enthusiasm at all. It makes me even more excited.
You have me confused with someone who hates astronomy for some reason.

The three dimensional gif of the remnant though would make for a great starting point for Frontier to add some remnants into the game, at least. But make them colorful!

...............

1. Glad to hear it.

2. I don't see how you can make that assumption, I was just clarifying the situation where your thread title implied that you were not aware of pre-existing supernova remnants being imaged.

Don't take my comments as a criticism when in fact they were intended to be informative.
