We need a "clean" database after a month or couple months tweaking. Not forced, simply voluntary and separate from those that choose not to.

Why? Because the game needs a lot of tweaking for one and two it would at least give FD "clean" servers to go from after tweaks. I don't say this because of any financial or ship/gear reasons, at all. I could care less what another commander has compared to me. Also, this would be very different than just clearing your save.

I for one would have no problem with a separate test server (optional) kept for testing tweaks and other things FD would like to test before releasing to the wild. Once the tweaks are done, leave both up.

Agree on the Test Server. Many MMOs have a "Public Test Server" where they release beta-version of upcoming patches that will go live soon, and players can export/import their live characters into the Test Server to test things out.

Yes ED isn't and MMO but that doesn't mean it can't also have a public test server too if they could afford the resources for it.

Why? In what way would the player base or FD benefit from having two seperate galaxies?

I'm assuming that Ironman is going to be its own separate entity. This is all just practice until Ironman mode drops anyhow.

One that I think would be most beneficial would be the recent instant billionaire thing. If that had happened on a voluntary test server FD could wipe it, roll it back or whatever and everyone affected would have already accepted the possibility of that happening. Similar to the past Alpha, Premium Beta, Beta and Gamma testing. We all knew that at any time our commanders account could/would/should be wiped or tweaked. We were not only ok with that but, we openly encouraged FD to do those things at the slightest hint it would help expedite development.

It was a cordial. helpful, tight place to hang out and worked very well. I'll gladly "donate" my time again.

[EDIT] Another big reason (for me) is the possibility, that now that the game is live, certain changes might not be implemented because it would require a wipe.

I'm OK with being a beta tester till they shot down the servers. But every time a wipe just because someone got a couple of zeros more on his virtual bank account? I am not sure about that.

The billionaire incident didn't bother me personally. That was just an example. I think it would be a lot more helpful than just for people that are worried someone else has more imaginary game credits than they do. I think, of course I could be wrong, usually am, that it would be about a lot more than that. With the game live any tweak or change could have a cascading effect that no one could foresee, good or bad, or even "break" the game in a way that mandated a server wipe or roll back.

I'm sure FD has internal builds they run the simulation and testers through regularly but, I'd imagine a larger test base would result in better results.

Also, if after several tweaks and balancing the game galaxy as a whole would greatly benefit but, isn't possible to integrate into the "live" game I'd hate to miss it if it could be solved by using another "instance" of the galaxy separate from the original.

Ironman, hmm.... I yet have to die after I restarted in Gamma :) Unless they do it Egosoft way where PC crash would also kill your DID game :)

Im not bothered by the money exploit, the other players don't effect my game.
Just gutted I didn't get the payout to test a Python.

The way I understood the Ironman plan, it was to be the same galaxy, but essentially there will be an "Ironman" private group and commanders can choose to join that group when they create and will be ejected from it when they die if they elect to keep playing the commander as a non ironman commander.

So you'll only be matched with other ironman players, but the same persistant galaxy is involved.

I'm not an expert, but the slow progression in this game and future development plans would make every wipe or rollback now and then, an official middle finger to the player base.
Devs should have a plan to implement new features and fix issues in such complex digital environment.
