We Need Life - Not Ladders (My View)

Why would P.Play make me want to back some picture with some kind of ethos attached which all boils down to 'Do this task over and over and we MIGHT give you a gun/shield/discount ...if you work hard enough'

A friend of mine playing the beta has basically said the same ... that rather than the background sim / NPC's dictating direction; PP is just boiling down to a massive grind-fest / perpetual CG with minimal rewards.... if thats 'it' then i don't see why they've bothered yet ... we need some substance to make the galaxy feel alive...

Like others have said... CG's right now are too simplistic, NPC's are just idiots in their banality of response

Warzones shouldn't just be tiny bubbles easily avoided ... you should have to cross barriers to gain entry to systems at war
Stations are too copy/paste in design / state / condition

Hopefully it will evolve in time ... i'm still hopeful

Frontier FAIL miserably at giving story to players, story in a form of text? Nobody cares about text. You want me to care about something? Watch those damn youtube tutorials how to make game, since you forgot how to make game story. Players need to experience game story with game mechanics not text! I don't care about text, i do care about my trade route not closing. Or some war that make things hard. If you experience story first hand and you are part of it, that's immersion not reading text about some non important person doing non important things 100s of LY away.

Current state of ED grind way to annie: see the module cost: nope, nope nope quit game. GG grindfest.

Let me be clear about grindfest, if we could find module upgrades from salvaging ships like going EVA and stripping some parts so we could sell them later, this might be better fun with the hunt for upgrades instead of yay i just need 1563 trips to my new upgrade style. It's more fun to hope that that next ship have my upgrade. Or even some rare. Well i guess this game is still growing let's expect the worst but hope for the best.

Personally I don't see the main game as a "Grindfest", there is no real reason to try to rush to the "Top" ship with the "Best" modules/weapons and therein lies the problem I have with CG's and PP .. they add to the belief that this game is all about the grind as those additions ARE about the grind, often leading to the belief that the whole game is built that way.
The best way to enjoy this game is have a plan before you launch your ship and carry out that plan, you may get sidetracked but there is the fun. That's why there is so much needed in the background to aid in the unexpected on your journey.

Although I don't read GalNet myself, I have no issue with it as a story telling device, I just want to see more of what is happening in those stories translating into the game itself, making you aware of what is going on .. in game.

I think that FD have made a great game here, I just think they have taken the wrong direction in what to add first, Like I said before Community Goals, Wings and Power Play would have all been FAR better (IMO) if the background, the life in the game was already in place .. here's hoping that 1.4 is a major update for life (as I tried to explain in the OP :) ) in the galaxy and not another attempt to "Bring us together"

Edit: I do Like figs, hate swear filters :)

The fact is that the potential for this game is huge .. But the thing that seems to let it down (in My view) isn't what is being added, it's what ISN'T being added.

The promise of a living breathing Galaxy has not appeared .. and is sorely missed.

Whilst things like CG's, Power Play and Wings have added to the game for some, I personally feel that fleshing out the galaxy first would have made these additions better.

Why would P.Play make me want to back some picture with some kind of ethos attached which all boils down to 'Do this task over and over and we MIGHT give you a gun/shield/discount ...if you work hard enough'

I would much rather, make my way around the Galaxy, doing the odd thing here and there and then get swept up in some kind of story that takes me somewhere else in my own story .. just by stumbling across it just by chance ..

I want to be stopped in space and asked for my help, I want to visit an unknown system only to find that help is desperately needed, not by some cold text mission on the BB or info on GalNet, but by what is going on around me, messages from NPC's .. the station in disrepair .. visual clues.

As I said before if a system is at war .. show me (and not just by adding a CZ on my navigation panel)

I've said very similar things elsewhere. What is missing is a sense of involvement, immersion, engagement in a living breathing world. For me, the two major areas needing improvement are: game-play mechanics, and content which utilises those mechanics (perhaps procedurally, but heavily guided, sculpted). Take for example, exploration. Literally, just point your ship at things and get close to them. That is not game-play. Not in 2015. There just needs to be more to do, more to discover, more unique stuff to read about, reports, videos, samples to gather, etc. So, that's the mechanics, but what about content? Imagine being contacted whilst docked at a station by a thermoforming corporation. Perhaps they need someone to find them a teraformable world in someone else's territory to enable them to stake some sort of claim. Perhaps it needs to be off the books - you might get interdicted on the way back with the data by rival companies. Maybe you have to find something specific on the surface - evidence of a structure of kind. The possibilities and permutations with just one mission paradigm like that, are endless. Other games have done a good job in the past of making procedural missions not seem overly cookie-cutter-esque. ED doesn't, so far.

We all know this OP. And sadly FD probably know this too for a long time unless they are working on the game blindfolded and are not allowed to look at the forums. People have been complaining in critics reciews, Reddit, here, Youtube, magazines and so on. Yet nothing that makes the game feel alive from FD so my hopes are kind of nonexistent. To br fair, i love this game very much and i believe it deservs more attention but i believe SC will overlap it by a mile if they keep adding sterile things to it. Planetary landing would be good, but im sure its gonna be the same stuff as landing in a station, dead and sterile. Nothing human. Nothing to make me feel like " whoah dude look a big space station finally some civilization!" Frankly every explorer says " Back to civilization" But being out there and being down here is kinda the same thing, only here there are ocasional "Wars"(aka shoot stuff and they keep respawning for a week)

IMO, the keyword here is immersion. The game doesn't feel immersive because it feels lifeless. A lot of things could be done to increase immersion :

- human NPCs in station (bound to happen with the walking around expansion)
- radio comms (please let me hear human voices, with videos for bulletin boards)
- optionnal cool stuff.

Take this EvE Valkyrie (flame suit online) trailer :

The startup and take off sequence is awesomely cool. The feeling of hopelessness when you see the enemy fleet jumping in is awesomely cool. The desperate radio chatter when the giant ball thing Capital ship jumps in is awesomely cool. The feeling that you're just a tiny ant in a massive space battle is awesomely cool (and would totally fit with Elite IMO). We need stuff like that.

PS : I know that the trailer is pre-rendered, doesn't stop me from drooling all over my keyboard.

What we have is a painting by numbers set where the paint colours are very slow in coming.

I don't doubt that much of what the OP wants and what many, myself included, would like to see will come to the game eventually.

The issue is, with almost no communication from Frontier going forward, we don't know what's coming or where the priorities are.

I would like to see, more than anything else, variety.
  • Different station interiors (colours, lighting, plant life, holes, broken pads etc.)
  • Different exteriors.
  • Damaged stations.
  • Graffiti. Rubbish. Signs of actual life/use.
  • Adverts (fictional of course).
  • Markets (clusters of ships selling goods outside station limits in a flotilla).
  • Shipwrecks (non-salvageable and salvageable using mining lasers).
  • Radio stations (local and interstellar)
  • Shipyards where all manor of ships are being constructed and launched in planetary orbit as well as...
  • Scrapyards and/or ships graveyards.

It takes time people. I, like most of you, am hoping for things to be added. However, i'm not stamping my feet and declaring that the Devs don't care, they do care and to that end they are trying to add something to the game that enables the players to choose to get involved with. There are many many things that they can add and just maybe will be done in the future, but you have to build the frame work first. They built the house, now they are steadily adding the furniture. Just because you don't like how the walls are painted in one room, doesn't mean you won't like what they do with the next one.

Oh, and you know what other game was totally lacking in features, was totally boring and had to wait a while before it had some content added to it after launch?

EvE Online.

Now look at it.

Elite D was more viable from the get go at launch than EvE was. It will also have more content after 6 months than EvE did after 1 year.

So, patience people. Lets actually let them get a year under their belts before we all start harping on about what's missing etc.
