Newcomer / Intro Weak and strong signal sources - is there any point in stopping?

I'm flying the spaceways in a Viper, picking up a few easy bounties from unidentified signals but I've yet to find anything of financial interest at weak or strong signal sources. Am I missing something?

My understanding is that SSS's are more lined up for wings events. I.e. more enemies, tougher enemies, etc.
Not sure about WSS's though? Maybe odd bits of cargo or black boxes?

I popped into a WSS and found a destroyed ship with 3 canisters of ancient alien artefacts. Didn't manage to get them anywhere useful before they were nicked off me though.

Unless you're on a mission signal sources are a waste of time.

If.you need to raise cash quickly, take your Viper to a resource extraction site and shoot bad guys for an hour. Don't waste time with something as unreliable as signal sources.

I tried this, but all the wanted ships were in groups of 2+ and were all competent or higher skill levels.....doing that in a sidewinder is.....suicidal.

One way I make some good money is by interdicting wanted NPCs. That Frameshift Interdictor is very useful for bounty hunting, especially if you only want to fight with enemies who have large bounties.

The only way I've really made any money from USSs is when I first started playing after release, picking up the abandoned-but-really-stolen cargo floating among wreckage. It didn't make me rich, but helped in giving me an initial head-start. Other than this.... I don't know how you can make good money in USSs. Sometimes there will be a good bounty on the ships there, sometimes not.

Well, my message wasn't really aimed at you.

Try nav beacons instead. Also, if you take out the lead ship in a wing, the wingmen bug out. You can also try resetting the instance by supercruising out and dropping back in. It might spawn more appropriate ships the second or third time.

As far as I can tell the WSS's are usually there for specific missions picked up at space stations in the nearby systems.
Such as "find black boxes", "bring me stolen goods" or "find rebel dead drop transmission sites" although as many times as not I find an NPC ship telling me not to do this do that instead mission updates etc..
They're not usually worth big bucks though

USS - Usually a single ship, either a mission counter offer or lone pirate
WSS - canisters of cargo... be selective as when you've picked them up you are subject to fines if scanned (don't bother with hydrogen fuel but ancient artifacts are worthwhile)
SSS - have you're wits about you...generally multiple pirates which have laid a trap by dumping gold canisters

Today I was doing a 'kill 5 pirates in this system' type naval mission.

I managed to get the first 2kills quite quickly but the rest took me ages. I'm in a semi kitted cobra so a clipper is probably my limit.

I was stopping at every signal source going to try and find my pirates. A strong SS turns up. I exit SC to find a loan cobra. Aha I think this is it. I line him up and suddenly 3 Vultures turn up...eeek full pips to engines and I'm out of there!

I did manage to get my 5 kills with about 5 minutes remaining. I cashed them in along with the bounties and 20 items of stolen goods from weak SS.

I think its hit or miss but I'm staying away from the strong ones for the time being.

Mostly it's not worth it (sometimes a single non-Wanted ship. Sometimes a Funeral / Wedding barge (??) etc.) Sometimes containers of loot though.

Once, I dropped out and there was one container ("AI Relic"). Then 3 Anacondas came at me (I think the message was something like "I can't believe that worked! Get him, boys!") but luckily the Viper is the fastest thing out there so I was able to scoop up the canister and run.

Got back to the station and: 109,000CR for one cannister. Woohoo! (It doesn't even show correctly in the Black Market screen, displayed as 109,00 but when I proceeded it was the full amount).

Now that I think about it, if I'd been scanned with that in my cargo hold, I'd have been financially destroyed! Lucky, I guess!

Experience tells me neither is particularly worth it. Good advice to go to a resourse site and try there (forgive spelling. Intoxicated)

I have been flying around looking for USS and heading back to the station being owed around 60,000.

I've found personal weapons and a hauler carrying slaves at WSS, it's useful at the low end for picking up an easy couple of grand.
