Weapon class/ratings

I appologize if this has been asked before.

I see there are lasers and cannons and other items with C3 or A2 configs etc...

Is A4 the best of any type of item. Plus what do they refer to. Do the letter and number mean anything in particular?

According to what the game tells me, here is what I know:
A is most expensive, quite heavy and draws more power than other items.
It is also better. Why, I have no idea.

Ok thanks. So alphabetically A is better than B .... but numerically 4 is better than say 2?

Really no explanation in detail about the class and rating that I have found.

The short version is this, keep the same number that your stock ship came with but go higher with the letter.

For example if your thrusters default was E3, then your next up grade would be D3 with A3 being the best.

Also keep in mind that I am no expert so please keep that in mind

One thing, however: D is generally the lightest. So, look for that if jump range is essential.

I believe that A class weapons are the most powerful, not that I've ever seen class A or B weapons, going all the way to G as the least. The number typically refers to the size of hard point it will fit in, with 1 being a small hard point. I don't believe you can see weapons in outfitting that will not fit in the size of hard point you are outfitting. That at least is how I understand it, and that is similar to other ship components. Class A is the best, and the number refers to the internal compartment size it can go in.

weapons are rated on their DPS and nothing else, they have fixed ratings for their type though, all C2 frags are A, all C3 fixed cannons are D etc, so really the rating is irrelevant, you should pay attention to class, and what type it is fixed/gimbal/turret.
