Weapon rails to move hard points in battle

That imperial clipper has hardpoints placed too far apart on the wings, which is why I'm suggesting a gantry-rail added to some hardpoints that support it. Mainly large ships with flat-ish surfaces.

Pressing assigned controls (for this example NUM1 AND NUM2) moves the rails backward and forwards or side to side (symmetrically) to increase or reduce the distance between hardpoints. Wider hardpoints are useful and so are narrow ones too.

To equip the rail, simply go into the weapon module in the outfitting. If it says Rail Supported you can select a rail corresponding to the weapon size and add a hardpoint on top. When engaging supercruise, the rail is locked and the hardpoint retracted.

Feedback would be appreciated :)

hey, did you ever took a look at the clipper in debug-camera? those hardpoints are placed on the narcelles, where do you want to fix the rail at?

while i like your suggestion for a special ship (like the wing folding of an adder, or those moving engines of a keelback....), the shape of ships does affect things like hardpoint-placements, which is a good thing, i think. so what you are asking for isn't really a modul, but a re-design of a ship hulls.

btw. - clipper, beautifull ship! enjoy flying.

The only thing I need is to just slightly adjust fixed weaoons in the hangar. Up to ten degrees up or down or just an arbitrary 180 turn so I can use fixed weapons backwards. :D

Well, you could institute a system where you can set your fixed weapons to converge at certain distance, like old school fighter planes used to have. Current system with auto-adjustment tends to be bit jumpy and is not very useful for ships that have widely dispersed hardpoints like the imperial line.

Interesting idea but as far as I am aware the placement of the weapons (wide/narrow) is part of ship balance so what you are suggesting would change that significantly, not saying it can't work, not even saying it's a bad idea. Just saying it may have unexpected consequences. :)
To be honest it'd be easier just to angle the weapon a touch inwards or outwards and have a convergence point for your weapons.

If clipper had good hard point placement it would be OP.

I don't agree. The weakness of the Clipper isn't the hardpoint placement. It's the glass cannon like aspect of the ship. The shields aren't very strong and the hull goes down quite quickly. Not the mention the tiny fuel capacity. The only thing it actually has going for it is it's speed.

And maneuverability... If outfitted properly it can be quite tanky as well, just not a shield tank, but then neither is the FAS.

It's shields aren't that bad either, although they did get nerfed quite heavily by the SCB changes though and you're not going to be able to face tank an anaconda, but with it's speed and maneuverability you shouldn't need to. However they're more than sufficient to protect you against turrets and smaller ships.

On the whole I find the Clipper to be one of the best balanced ships in the game at the moment, it has amazing speed and agility with good firepower and a strong hull. This is offset by it being a large target, somewhat weak shields for it's size and needing to use gimbals on most of it's hardpoints.

It can get up to 650MJ of shielding, I wouldn't call that 'glass cannon'. Its also very fast, contains loads of internals and has a decent jumprange, all for a surprisingly low price. The poor HP placement is a pretty big deal to me personally btw, same with the iCourier. But a Clipper with good placement for fixed would indeed be OP, as Ozram said.

Yet an other buff my fav ship thread however this one has some Imagination™.
Well I can deal with the hardpoint placement, it's more for User Need rather than personal gain. If someone's far away, a closer hardpoint placement might not be as good in terms of gimbal, whereas shorter ranges will need closer hardpoints

You are very naive, thinking they want to make this kind of work.
a) console people would be out of their cute colored buttons on their mutilated tiny keyboards
b) this goes far beyond excel spreadsheets fun and artwork(engineers update are covered by artwork and excel, if you think about it), which is what they do, while real development is focused on other games.

Agreed.
