Newcomer / Intro Weapons Control - Auto Fire Off?

I was hoping you could help me with my understanding about the use of auto tracking weapons.

I was in a RES, I’m a noob, and had chalked up about 15 kills. My lasers start firing on my target until they are out of range or over heated, but as soon as they can, they began firing again and I can’t stop them. A federally ran through my auto firing lasers and was slightly hit and then all of them attacked me and killed me and I lost all my bounty. Is there a way to turn off auto fire after the first trigger? Or a way to avoid this situation?

Many thanks

Greetings! If you mean turrets, set their fire mode to 'target only' in your right hand functions panel, and then you can stop them firing by de-selecting the target.
You can also retract weapons, but they'll start shooting again when you deploy them if they're set to 'fire at will.'

You can also swap fire-groups. Even if your second fire-group is configured exactly the same as the first, changing groups stops turrets from firing until initiated again - unless of course you have them set to fire-at-will (poor Will) as then they will engage hostiles again right away.

Sell the turreted weapons and buy gimballed.

It'll cost you far less credits, it'll be more engaging, you'll do far more damage and weapons only fire when you hold the trigger.
