Newcomer / Intro Weapons: Taking down shields

What type of weapons are best for taking down shields - pulse or beam lasers, Cannon or multi-cannon, fragmented Cannon, rail guns, or missiles?

Please help me to decide.

I now have on my Cobra
Med hardpoints: beam lasers, E class
Small hardpoints: cannons, E class.

On the Cobra, two small gimbal beamers and two medium gimbal MCs will let you handle most NPCs pretty well. The beamers to take care of the shields, and then the MCs to eat into the hull and subsystems.

If going after players, you're going to want one small and one medium rail-gun, and one small and one medium gimbal MC. The rail-guns strip off the shield faster than shield-cell banks can replenish, and also double up to to provide a good amount of hull and subsystem damage for when the target deploys chaff making your MCs next to useless.

Mind you, using the rail-guns require a bit of practice to get right.

I know it's not really practical, but I saw a video of a Viper taking down a Python (with full shields) in about 3 or 4 seconds, with 4 Dumbfire missile launchers (not sure if the Dumbfire has been nerfed since). It's not exactly practical - too expensive - but it's certainly a quick way of taking down someone's shields!

You won't get anything like the time to kill a CMDR so you need to deal massive damage very quickly. NPC you have lots more time on a softer target.
No. There is no time for you to face an Elite Conda NPC one on one. they are not like the past. Ranking do affects their loadouts and actions. You will probably going to face multiple beam laser turrets and Frags.
The difference between NPCs and CMDRs are CMDRs will do FA maneuvers and more difficult to hit when one on one.

On paper Thermal weapons are more effective to shield.
When you ask which one is the fastest.
Consider which of the shield you are fighting against.
I will say PA and Railgun do the most damage to shield but incase you have such power to fly with it.
Beam do fry good stuffs, still eating up power but easier to use and cope with.

Beams are also easier to blow powerplants as thermal lasers are dead accurate.

I use 4 X multi cannons. I have had no issues (so far) tearing through NPC shields.

I stayed with full Multis till I was in an Asp, only started using lasers to ensure I had always had some ammo. Maybe not quite such a good idea now that you can camp in Res for weeks raking in the cash, but Multis do work well enough.

What's PA?
An odd weapon, Plasma Accelerator.
Is a weapon that can wreck sub-system with one or two shots including powerplant.
Odd thing is if you missed the shot and hit the hull, it doesn't hurt very but still a bit.

Cobra has yaw problem if I recall. And two hardpoints have small arc.
Beams are great but smaller ships easily run into power problems, stick with Pulse / Burst.
Gimballed is a must for Cobra due to the arc.
Multicannon / Cannon are just up to you. If you are doing assassination, big slow targets and a powerplant nowhere to go.
Cannon is better. Multicannon do constant damage but constant damage means constant power.

Multicannon by the way.
When suddenly a wild cop pops out in front of you when you are holding your multicannon,

and you are wanted in the system.
