Weapons that won't fire unless you have a target selected?

I can't seem to find comprehensive info on which weapons will fire regardless if there is a target selected or not.

Example, I went to fire at a planet station generator (generators are not target-able while in a ship but are when in the SRV) with my ship and not a single weapon I had in my hardpoints would fire.

Seems some weapons MUST have a target. I'm trying to find a list or info of which weapons require a target.

Thanks in advance.

Turreted weps need a target usually. However, there is a "forward fire only" mode for your turrets under the Functions section of your right hand HUD menu.

Missiles AFAIK always need a target.

Fixed weapons never need a target. ;)

Gimballed weps work as fixed if no target is selected.

Seeker missiles need to lock on to a targeted object, I have not used dumbfire.
Mines don't need a target, but are of no value in your situation.
Torpedos I have not used but I expect will need to lock on like Seekers.
With all other weapons it is down to the mount.
Turreted weapons in Foward Fire mode don't need a target, but will in the other two modes.
Forward and Gimballed don't need a target.

Dumbfire missiles used to work just fine pre 2.1 for planet Generator bombardment. Not done these since but iirc I think I heard talk of FDev stopping or reducing the ability to bombard from the air, thereby forcing players into the damm buggy......not sure how far they went down this route though.
