"Weekend Fleet Pack" at Eve Online

CCP did something clever: they came up with the "Weekend Fleet Pack".

As you can see, it offers three days of Omega along with 50 Plex for $3.75. This is a smart move in light of their monthly subscription increase to $20 a month. I've been feeling the Eve itch again but I was sticking with the free "Alpha" account because I wasn't sure that I was going to get my money's worth out of a month-long Omega account. So, when this came along, I snapped it up because it was a perfect way to get a short-lived Omega account without committing to the full $20. After three days of Omega, I decided, yeah, I did want to subscribe for a full month. And that is precisely why this pack was created! Best of all, there are no limits to how many times you can sub this way (and it doesn't have to be a weekend, either :D ).

It's funny that I find myself enjoying Eve the more it "dies" (according to the official forum). It is precisely the declining player counts that I think it making the game more enjoyable for more casual PvE players like me. Heck, I actually ran multiple missions in low sec today without getting molested once. I even made ~400K ISK shipping electronic components out of a low-sec system. Eve Online is dead! Long live Eve Online!

(As an aside, I watched some of the Eve Fest presentations and I get the distinct impression that CCP was prepared for lower player counts and is slowly morphing the game more towards PvE as a way of compensating. They even mentioned putting more NPC ships in the game to give it more life, sort of like Elite or X4. If that proves to be the direction that CCP is now taking the game, I am all for it!)

What's an Omega and what good are 50 plex for?

You have two types of accounts in Eve: the free-to-play Alpha account that caps the amount of skill training you can do along with the type of ships you can fly, and the monthly subscription fee Omega account that unlocks the entire game without limits. PLEX can be used for different things: If you have enough, you can use them to pay for your subscription, or you can just sell them for in-game currency (ISK) to buy new ships/equipment/etc. You can also use them to buy skins and other things in the in-game store.

(I hope this is not against forum rules - please delete if it is! - but here is my referral code if you want to try the game and get some free skill points)

In other news, this is something I had hoped we would see in Elite: stars going nova with the resultant gameplay opportunities.

It is interesting how both Eve and Elite have BIG things going on in November.
