Engineers Weight is now an issue?

Ok, I was in the Refitting area and was noticing that as my mass increased on a particular item selected that my max speed was being adjusted up or down depending on the mass. Hmmm, has anyone else noticed this. As I was selecting military grade bulkheads, for instance, the max boost speed went down. But when I selected the lightweight bulkheads the max boost speed went up. So, as I am constantly being chased by modded NPC's and need all the boost speed I can get, I sold my military grade bulkheads for the lightweight, got a 5M credit refund and a max boost speed increase.

When did mass affect the max boost speed? Maybe, this has been the case all along, but I don't think so. Something new?

I think it's always been that way... Jump range, max speed, effectiveness of shields... all influenced by mass.

No, it has been the case all this time. But now you can actually see how parts you apply change it. The same goes for cargo btw, so 400t extra does slow down your ship.

Nope. Was there all along.

BTW, the new improved drives are very, very sensitive to weight.
So much so that if modding a small fighter with those, lightweight mount
might not be a bad idea.

Cargo does indeed influence speed and stuff, as does the amount of fuel carried.

Or with the High Performance Engines 4 tons of cargo :)

Yeah, still working on that. I got one for the iCoutier, and for now the 430-455 I get out of it with boost is enough. I'll lighten up my junker (as I use it for salvage) when I feel like a speed demon.

Yep, that's the way it's always been. Weight does and always has had a profound affect on boost speeds as well as jump range right since the very early days. Although on the little ships (with the new enhanced boosters) it has a particularly strong affect because of the optimal mass on the new boosters. If you want to "git good" with the little ships you have to learn to do without certain things (military armour) and instead learn how to use speed as a weapon.

Yes - yes - Are you sure?
To my understanding the shields were only affected by the base hull mass, i.e. the type of the ship. Made sense to my, as it was a measure of how much the shield had to 'stretch' to encompass the entire vessel. How much total mass is inside the shield bubble does - to my knowledge - not matter. Am I wrong, or did that change in some manner?

Anyone knows for sure what's right?

AFAIK Shields are the only thing that aren't affected by added Mass (HRPs, Bulkheads, Cargo).

At tad counterintuitive but it's fixed-tied to the default hull mass it seems.
In comparison. Thruster max. mass for example can be hit in certain configurations - upto and including being unable to outfit certain items anymore (will state : Exceeds Mass).

But going beyond the Shield max. Mass due to Cargo/Configuration etc. doesn't make them fail or anything. They still work at their rated Strength for the Ship, even if total Ship mass (full Cargo Hold or heavier Config) exceeds their rated specs.

I stand corrected... I always thought that only fuels and cargo didn't add to hull mass but apparently modules don't either. [up]

Shield strength is based on your *base* hull mass.

Drive speed and FSD range is based on your *total* mass at the time. This includes cargo and limpets, but not materials and data.
