Newcomer / Intro weight of cargo

How do I figure out the weight of the cargo so I can better calculate how far I can jump? I've got caught on this before and had to sell back cargo to the station I bought it from at a loss because I couldn't make the jump.
The ships configuration shows all parts as loaned.... Do I have to purchase them before I can upgrade?
What parts can I upgrade on my sidewinder to make it jump further?

All units of cargo weigh 1t. Know what your jump distance is Laden and Unladed using the slider on the Galaxy Map.
If you swap out loaned parts for purchased parts, then leave the station, you cannot get them back. They are returned to the loaner.
FSD is the 1st thing to increase your jump distance. Other than that, purchasing other items of class D which are lighter will improve your jump range a little.

also you can with some modules buy lower sizes whitch will be lighter and therefore increase your jumprange..

Ex: my 'conda uses an A7 powerplant because the size 8 are heavier... A7=C8 in energy output but the C8 is twice the mass so without compromicing power output you could increase the jump range. However the A7 does cost much more than the C8 module....

Threre's a slider in one of the menus of the galactic map where you can adjust the cargo mass to see if you can make the jump to your destination.

Not knocking you Evil.... it's good info

Using good old Fantasy Shipyard I noticed that using the A7/C8 powerplant gained or lost 0.35 Ly !!!! Is it worth the effort for such a small amount ? or would it be better to spend less and give up such a small amount of jump increase ?

I've often seen, on these boards the argument about dropping weapons on a ASP to increase jump range for exploring..... I've discovered, through use of the linked site and personal outfitting fiddle/trial and error... that it's the same result... and complete bumpkum..... dropping 4 x 1F/G pulse lasers gains less than .30 Ly's ...wicked !!! But people believe it :(

It's a personal choice I suppose ?... no right or wrong answer :)

is there anyway to jump closer to a station? Sometimes I end up being 100,000 away and it takes a long time to super cruise to the starport.

I think you have a point there reguarding me spending 30+ mio cr. just to increas jumprange by .30 LY but as you know sometimes those .30 LY could make a huge difference when plotting longer trips as it may give you that little difference that means you could shorten the number of jumps you'll need.
At least that's my experience when plotting a course of say 150-250 LY to go to a CG or doing Rares or whatever reason you might have to go somewhere... I agree that if you only need to go a short distance like 20-30 LY it will proberly not make much difference in number of jumps to make.. Also ther is the accummulated effect like getting .30 LY here and .30 on weapons maybe .40 LY on some D-rated module all adds up.(My point is you cannot have too much jump range in this game, as long as it doesn't affect the main purpose for your ship) And last I have to use my cr. for something in the game besides buying new ships... :D

No, you alway jump in close to the main star. The system map will tell you how far the station is from the jump point.
 
That sucks.... It's the one thing that sucks about this game is the amount of time you sit there doing nothing. It's like being on the interstate highways between cities... Nothing but miles and miles of miles and miles... Boring as hell.

Dealing with all cargo by the tonne certainly makes calculations a little easier, which is good as trade route planning is hard enough, but it is a little funny that cargo racks completely ignore volume :eek:

Not sure what the in-game reason for a rack that can fit in 4t of clothes or tea can only take 4t of heavy metals as well :S Perhaps because of the extreme changes in movement, in and out of F-T-L travel etc., then it is not just an empty box but has some active dampening that would limit it to a maximum mass (not going to get caught out there :p) regardless of how small a volume that would take up.

Nobody says you have to go to systems where the arrival point is 100,000 LS away from the star. If you're trading, don't choose a binary system with large arrival distances. For highest trade income, I choose systems where the arrival point is <500LS and typically I find highly profitable trade routes with arrival point at <100LS. Same goes for systems with RES - there are too many where the RES are <200LS from the star. In short, I rarely waste time sitting doing nothing. During the short trips (typically 25 to 200LS) from star to station, I play the cop and search for bounties flying in SC or use Slopey's tool to search for other trade routes.

In-System Jumps (from one star to another in a binary system) is something Frontier is thinking about. So the extreme distances (100000ls or the insane 0.21ly (Hutton Orbital anyone)) can be abridged.
