Weird economics

Was recently doing a bit of trading on one of the common Silver / Bertrandite routes, when it sprang to my mind that Bertrandite is a mineral which is used to refine Beryllium from.

So selling Bertrandite to a refinery station, which in turn produces and sells Beryllium makes total sense it seems.

But to my surprise they are buying Bertrandite at around 21k per ton, but selling the refined Beryllium for only 7k. To make things worse, Bertrandite contains only ~15% of Beryllium, so they need roughly 7 tons of Bertrandite to make 1 ton of Beryillium.

Not complaining, I will happily go on selling them Bertrandite but I'm still wondering how they are not bankrupt yet, since they are making a loss of at least 20k per ton of Bertrandite they are buying.

What's in the other 85% of Bertrandite that they may be selling as well?

Yeah .. this is the absolute worst part of Elite that I rather not spend time thinking too much as it totally breaks the immersion. They went to great deals to make the physics and scale accurate but the economics is worse than a pay to win Android casual game. Like why would you get paid more to do a simple cargo delivery mission when for the same money they could buy a whole ship and fly it themselves.
Also .. who finances all the free sidewinders for new commanders?
Why would anyone choose a profession arming multi-cannons for 2000Cr per gun when they can just get a free sidewinder at anytime and make a whole lot more money?
Danger? What danger is there with the all powerful escape capsule and free sidewinder in the worst possible case?

Yup.. just don't think about it if you don't want to spoil your game :)

Imagine if mining meant you collected raw stones, possibly slightly refined, sold it to a Refinery station, that immediately made Beryllium from your Bertrandite, then you bought that a minute later, then you went to an industrial station, who turns it into some machinery or so, then move those to the next. That would be almost like a side-quest, or a small short story where you added worth at every step.

But no, lets have it all backwards like you describe above, have mining ships already do half the work so you get to skip the whole refinery part if you decide to get into this "stream" and of course, don't make it profitable.
