Welcome PS4 players - become immune to big ship envy - train to fly FA off. FA off = joy!

Hi all! o7

Welcome to ED. :)

I just want to put this out there to encourage you to learn to fly 100% flight assist off. Once you have learnt it, which you will do, all of a sudden that big lumbering Anaconda becomes far less attractive and instead you look at how you can performance enhance your sidewinder so you can hit those trenches as hard as possible or with finesse!

Like much of Elite's design, the flight mechanics are top draw quality. There are two main types: Flight assist - on and Flight assist - off. Many CMDRs use a mixture of the two, depending on the situation.

  • FA - on is where the flight computer controls your ship so when you stop turning your ship stops your turn; to turn you need to be holding the turn.
  • FA - off turns off the flight controller, making the ship behave pseudo Newtonian. Start the roll and let go of the stick and the ship will continue to roll until you apply the opposite roll.

Why would you do this? Because it makes flying a joy!

Yes it is hard but your muscle memory learns very quickly. (That is the function of the cerebellum, you don't think about putting your fingers on the keyboard etc. and once it has been embedded in the cerebellum you don't think about it in Elite either!)

And the most important benefit - you truly become one with your ship - unlike EvE that claims the Capsuleer is one with the ship, in ED you truly do become one with your ship.

If you are interested there are loads of Tutorial videos out there. Newton's Gambit is a Discord channel dedicated to helping CMDRs learn the art. People there are always happy to help. https://discord.gg/EN39rcP

Oh! Proof that the Sidewinder is all you need when you fly FA off.
Even mining is fun. ;)

Sure FAOff has its place but generally it is like walking to your holiday destination when you can just get on a plane and fly there.
You can do EVERYTHING in this game without using FAOff so as a very experienced ED pilot I would suggest that you just enjoy the game and get to learn its quirks first. Then when you are fairly competent you can explore the so called pure experience of FAOff.
Just don't fell you are missing out on anything,I am triple Elite on XB and very rarely use it.

I was half entertaining the idea of turning FA off at the start and hitting the learning curve hard without it right from the off so I don't get too used to it. Does the idea have merit or am I totally bonkers?

The learning curve will go from being a steep hill into a cliff-like structure but, like riding a bike, once you've got it... ;-)

I've played with permanent FAOff a few times, and it does make flying a whole new ball game, but for day-to-day flight I tend to only toggle FAOff during fights

Like using fixed weapons instead of gimbaled, the sooner you start the sooner you will be comfortable with it.

Neither are essential but both skills are handy ones to have.
