Newcomer / Intro Welcome to ShieldsUP!

Welcome to ShieldsUP! https://GRC.com If your worried about UPnP then test your router

MY results are Your Internet connection has no Reverse DNS.... which is good

and testing Upnp

THE EQUIPMENT AT THE TARGET IP ADDRESS
DID NOT RESPOND TO OUR UPnP PROBES! :D

EDIT There was a thread about UPnP or port forwarding , that I was reading , saying UPnP was a problem , & some links followed them put them here , for those who think THEIR UPnp is a problem ? , The Thread direct people to the Newcomers Forum , could not find the follow though in the LONG list.

Actually, it isn't spam and is very good at doing what he is pointing it out for. If you are having issues getting to see other commanders, then ShieldsUP is a perfectly good page to go to.

It will tell you specifically if your router or computer has a firewall that is preventing communication. I am just surprised that it hasn't been brought up before. I used it a lot about 5 years ago when I was doing end user IT support on a daily basis. Just never thought about it for gaming...

edit: it also can help explain why in game communications have issues working as well.

My router's UPnP works flawlessly for every other application that needs it.

What's different about the E:D networking protocol? Does it not use a standard port for in-game comms?

ShieldsUp checks to make sure your UPnP port is not open on the Internet side of the router. You want this, if you expose UPnP to the Internet, anyone can open ports on your router. If you need UPnP, you only want to give access to applications running on your local network. E:D should only make a call to UPnP to open the ports in the router from the inside.

If you run ShieldsUp and your IP DOES respond to UPnP probes, you need to shut that down in your router.

It may for you, but not every router works as flawlessly with UPnP and port opening and port triggering. Some games and systems work better than others. Consoles often have problems with matchmaking due to strict and moderate NAT due to appropriate ports not opening. The difference is, consoles and their games often tell you if the NAT is strict and hence the correct ports aren't open.

People having issues with matchmaking with friends, etc may have uPnP and port forwarding issues and E:D won't tell you if that's the case.

I haven't clicked on the site, but the subject is a very valid one.

Update: Having looked more at ShieldsUP, it's not really related to port forwarding and UPnP with respects effects of matchmaking, etc and would not help solves or indicate an issue with someone's router not port triggering correctly.....So yes, I'd regard this as inappropriate or spam.

This is testing uPNP in, not out and it is out that needs to work. uPNP in opens you up to hackers which is what it is checking for so not really relevant to the game.

If your worried about UPnP then test your router.. as for SPAM or inappropriate I think this is a stretch , I had not heard of the UPnP issue , until I read the THREAD saying there was a security issues & a problem , with some people using it with ED , it was an old thread & it did direct me to Newcomers Forum , but as I've said could not find anything else
BUT the original thread did have SHIELD are up post saying go check , now I had use this service years ago , and it has a good record, So I went and check mine

I put the link up to help other IF THEY ARE WORRIED about their UPnP assuming others may wish to know too

I have no-idea how relevant the information is for ED final release in 2015 would like to know, but it is UPnP & was concerned giving what I was reading, and I now Ive checked a least I'm content that mine UPnP are ok regardless whether ED is using them or not , well I hope so:rolleyes:

Yes, it's blatant spam and not relevant.

Please remove.

Guys, if you are concerned about having the correct forwarding set up in your router then do it manually and don't rely on UPnP to do it automatically for you. Portforward has guides for majority of routers: http://portforward.com/english/applications/port_forwarding/Elite:_Dangerous/
