Welcome to the Thread At The End of the Universe

First off, why I'm starting this thread. Stories! I love stories! Stories of adventure, stories of piracy, stories of battle, stories, stories stories and Elite is full of the best kind...personal.

I live in the US so I'm usually at a disconnect with most of the bigger fan base and communities so events and the like are hard for me to be a part of, and so, like Andrew Ryan, I created a place to get that community feeling.

WELCOME TO THE THREAD AT THE END OF THE UNIVERSE

This is the new home for all those weary wanderers and bruised battlers to come and share their stories, screens and videos.

Explorers can share their tales of the deep, as well a their persistent discoveries so we can catalog them in what will become The Mad Guide to the Galaxy.

Traders, Pirates and Hunters can come to a momentary truce and instead of sharing fire, can share stories of trickery, escape and punishment.

There is no role place necessary, no events to meet at or guidelines to follow. Nope, this is just a place for you to come to at the end of you day and share your experiences and stories.
Each week I'll be making a newsletter containing a screenshot of the week, discoveries of the week and stories of the week as well as a CMDR spotlight, if available. I'll be the first, to show the format of the spotlight, and if you'd like to submit your own profile thereafter you are welcome to do so and it may be that weeks spotlight.

So, without further ado, the DOORS ARE OPEN! Enjoy and I look forward to your stories CMDRS.

CMDR MADRAPTOR.

New website idea to go with this thread, to house the guide of discoveries we find.

Beautiful! My favorite aspect of this video is that, knowing how long that trip took and being an explorer myself, I can really understand that feeling of what do I do now? I'm a going to remember how to dock? Haha. Also that feeling, even though it's a game, that you are around life again. You guys spent 6 months out in the deep, and interestingly enough being out there away from life really does get to you, again for a game that is strange to have happen. Love the video and wished I'd been able to join in on that experiences. Thanks CMDR

Stories, eh? Well, I'm just a freighter commander, but I'm sure I can tell a tale or two. I recall one time, I was hauling a load of food to some planetary installation suffering a major famine. I had just just dropped in to the system, and started to pull away from the star when some would-be pirate jammed my drive, and pulled me out of supercruise. He'd pulled me out so close to the star everything started smoking in the few seconds it took to point myself away and hit the afterburners. Even still, I was taking some serious heat damage, and systems were failing left and right. I purged my coolant systems and dumped a heat sink, but I was still building heat faster than I could dump it.

About that same time, I heard some noise on the comms, and out of the corner of my eye I could see that yahoo who'd thought me an easy mark. Seems he'd come in even closer to the star than I, and I saw chunks of his ship fling past me as I managed to boost myself far enough away that my hull had finally stopped glowing. What could I say? Cosmic justice served nuclear-hot. I managed to limp in to port with not much holding my ship together except hope and delivered my cargo. One of the funniest things I've seen to be honest.

Yes, Solar Justice at it's best. I had a big grin on my face when I got to that part. Great story CMDR! I can just see his face now, "Oh, Sh**!" he is screaming as his alarms are ringing off and his canopy shatters and he succumbs to the power of the 'Verse!

Alright, I've got another story to tell. I'd been hired to haul a load to some remote location, out near the edge of civilization. I don't mind long hauls, as they usually pay pretty well, and the sign on my hull reads "Ship for Hire", so I loaded up and was on my way out to the middle of nowhere. About half-way out, I get a message. Seems the stuff I'm hauling is a rather desirable commodity, and I need to be on the look-out for hostiles. I didn't even have time to think "Gee, thanks for telling me" before I've got somebody jamming my drives and making demands I dump my cargo.
Well, I've got something to dump alright. Cut my throttle and warmed up my weapons. As soon as I came out of cruise, I hit the afterburners and left a nice trail of mines in my wake. As soon as my drive was cool enough, I jump back into cruise, and continue on my way - or at least that was my plan.
These guys were not backing off, so rinse and repeat - I drop out of cruise, leave a nice minefield behind me, and continue on my way. But they're still not taking the hint, so we dance once more, only this time I jump out of the system entirely. But my pursuers are not taking the hint, and they're jamming me again. I figure, this is getting old now and they're not going to back off, so I double down on the mines, and take it a little slower, figuring if they haven't gotten though their heads yet I'm not about to give up my cargo, they're not going to, and that leaves me only one option.

But this time, they break off. Their ships have to be in pretty bad shape, and I head off once more. Just one more jump until I reach my destination, and no more sign of these guys. I lock on my approach, start to relax a little, and drop out of cruise, ready to be done with this run. But these guys are not ready to be done with me just yet. They managed to work out where I was going, and were laying in wait for me, just outside the station's no-fire zone. I'm taking hits left and right as I approach the station. I don't even have time to radio fight control to dock trying to evade all the fire I'm taking.

But shields are holding, hull is good, so I set a course directly at the station, and punch it full-throttle, kick the afterburners at 5 km, and angle myself just a bit. I just grazed the toast rack and bounded off with these guys right on my six. Then I felt it - a deep rumbling, like a massive thunderstorm. The station's cannons roared to life, and were laying down fire on the bunch who'd been chasing me through at least half a dozen systems. I saw the first ship go up in a ball of fire as I came around, this time lined up with the mail slot, and only 2.5 km away. I hit the comms to clear docking as the second pursuer went up in flames just above me. Flight control hadn't even finished telling me what pad to set down on when I hit the afterburners once more, and shot through the slot like a cannon round. Chunks of the third ship were raining in behind me as the rumble of fire from the station dropped off.

I saw the back of the station coming at me, despite having my engines in full-reverse. I fired the forward thrusters for everything they were worth, and dumped every bit of power I could spare into my shields. I braced for the worst. I didn't think the station wanted a back door any more than I wanted to put one there. I closed my eyes...
There was, perhaps, 30 centimeters between me and the back of the station when I came to a stop and the docking computer took over, setting me down on a pad 300 meters behind me. I dropped off my cargo, and a ton of biowaste that had turned up in the process.

And they say freighter hauling is dull.

Another great story. Gives me a new look on the freighter side of things. I've yet to feel the joy of hauling, perhaps because I get my fix of hauling in American Truck Simulator, but I do enjoy the exploring and scavenging.

Been quite around here lately but with the release of 2.2 drawing closer I'm hoping to get some more stories and more discoveries shared here. I've updated the way the newsletter will work below....

With that I make a call for stories, and discoveries. I will feature 3 stories, 4 discoveries as well as a cmdr spotlight. for discoveries I ask for screenshots, videos and coordinates (system, body, numerical)

Thank you and fly safe CMDRS!
