Well 15 minutes of that was an eternity

I am unlocking engineers, all is going very well, setting up for this weekend, working on Selene Jean (500 tons of ore mined) and Lei Fung (50 trade markets). I figured I'd do both at once, 6 trips out to fill the hull, figured I'd do 8 markets per hull load to unload. So I set up a mining Orca which turns out fairly promising. https://eddp.co/u/HoNUWhaL So I have my shiny new ship, I don't hate the way it flies, and I find a High RES and jump in. Well 15 minutes of this and I'm ready to stick a pen in my eye. Luckily I take all my notes in Notepad, so I don't have one nearby. Anyone have any advice since ultimately I'm going to need this engineer?

Don't go to a RES, just drop (aka crash) in to any part of the ring.
When you drop, something may spawn, pirates, security, other miners etc. If you have no cargo, let pirates come, and scan you. They'll then leave. Then go mine any old thing until you're done. :)

Don't forget Limpets. :p

No wonder you found it awful, your design is terrible. You are mining, so a fuel scoop is wasted space. The refinery is in too big a slot, you need both those class 5s for limpet controllers. No prospector, so you will get 1/2 the yield from roids.

Try this

edit - and don't go into a RES.

I agree with everyone here OP... sorta.

Dump the Fuel Scoop for a 5A collector.
Dump the ADS for 1A Prospector

Yes, go mine RES (at least try it, you might like it). In that build I wouldn't mine anything bigger than a LOW RES, and always make sure you give the cops time to spawn before you start.

(P.S. I know people like using it, but the Orca really isn't the most efficient miner out there.)

Lim's got the general idea, but personally, I'd go this way: https://coriolis.edcd.io/outfit/orc...AA.EweloBhBmSQUwIYHMA28QgIwV0A=&bn=Orca Miner

A fuel scoop is never a bad thing to have - even if it's small. Mining a RES is fine - I mine Haz RES myself.
5 Active collector limpets is plenty, and a prospector will not only help your yields, but also let you know what you can expect to find.

Third option:

Assuming OP isn't mining in open, what the hell is the point of a shield on a ship that boosts at 522? As for the 4A refinery you may think it's overkill but don't forget it doubles up as another 10 tons of cargo space for a total of 110. If he really doesn't mind having a six bin grinder, stick another rack in the class 4 slot.

Or just boost about 15km away from the res marker where nothing should bother you anyway.

All of this is assuming OP is allergic to Pythons obviously...

Been awhile since I mined but here's maybe something worth doing.

I tickle a rock first letting loose one chunk before doing any prospecting limpet so I can get a read on what's in there. If its something I want then I'll prospect it and mine away and collect.

I used an AspX for all my engineer mining. Was perfectly adequate, so much so, that I still have it (just in case).

I think I'll adapt my build into something like this. TBH, I could care less what I mine, how much I make, etc. I just want the fastest 500 tons of whatever garbage i can sell. The Fuel Scoop is/was there because I wanted to just take my hull load and start hopping to different trade markets to sell to so I can double down and unlock Lei Fung using the time spent mining. The dedication of module slots however to make mining possible means multi-role is out the window

Not really worried about an efficient miner, in fact I will never touch mining again once I have this engineer. I like the Orca because it has 39ly jump range with 522 boost and nicer flight characteristics (to me) than the asp.

I was making the bold assumption that he could actually fly a ship :D

I can fly but there is something to be said for having margin of error. If I lose even a single hull load (because I hate this particular task so much to begin with) I will be very discouraged along the way.

Thanks for all the tips and advice to straighten out my build guys, now I just need to find a system with plenty to mine.

Delkar has pristine rings. If it matters.

For the 500t unlock, and trade thingies I'd just mine any old crap from anywhere.

Btw, you can also do the trade contact things by buying anything from the market, and sell it straight back. I just flew around doing that while playing normally. Lol

Well that's a perfect efficiency hack for the 50 trade markets, thanks. If I do it that when, then I can just mine/refine and jettison couldn't I? I don't have to sell the cargo to have the stats count I don't think, and then I could just stay out there til I am done. I wish I knew what the minimum interaction to qualify as "ore mined" is. If I could strip out refining/collecting and just play asteroid blaster I'd be down for that. Take some rep sir

Use a federal drop ship littered with turrets and mine in a low sec res site and watch the fireworks. Also brings in some bounty money as well.
