I just killed my first Thargoid, and I've got to say that it was the most fun I've had fighting an NPC since launch.
It took a wing of four highly engineered ships and experienced Commanders the better part of ten minutes to bring the beasty down, and even then we all had to repair immediately. But you know what? We felt like a million bucks after the thing finally exploded (four million, technically, what with the combat bond)!
My only request is this: please, please please don't nerf the Thargoids! A lot of players are going to be upset at how challenging they are- don't listen to them! The challenge was spectacular.
