Well, I can't believe I just did that

I've been playing Elite for a year now, and I've always been a 'one ship' guy, for the most part. Whenever I 'upgraded' to a new ship, I always sold the previous one. I started keeping two ships when I bought my FDL, as my other ship for missions and exploration wasn't going to be very effective for combat. When I finally moved into an anaconda, I kept the FDL because I use it to pick up chicks at the drive in, but I have never really needed it again. I did buy other ships from time to time, but sold them as soon as the immediate need was over.

A few months ago I bought a DBX and do use that a lot for getting around the bubble and have enjoyed having it. My anaconda is fitted for exploration (61ly range with SLF, SRV, Shield, and AFMU) and is also the ship I use for combat rolls. Since going from one 'load out' to the other involves changing everything (especially since every module is now engineered, even the modules that are the same class need to be swapped), I 'recommission' it and swap the name and livery.

Yesterday, I couldn't get my jump range back when going from the combat build to exploration, and I had a scare that I had scrapped the wrong module somehwere along the way. I got it sorted in the end, but the station where I was docked had annacondas in the yard, so I bought another one.

I swore that I wouldn't be 'that guy', but here I sit, with two annacodas. I put different ship kits on them and all that, and the characteristics couldn't be more different, and while I'm happy to have room for module storage again, I still feel kinda dirty.

Sorry I let you down, universe.

But hell, if you don't like it, build me a suitable replacement!

Building your ship for different rolls, some of those are wheat and some rye, but all of them can be buttered and if you do it while they are hot, those rolls can be delicious.

In my main account I have a total of 57 ships. 17 of them are at Shinrarta Dezhra.

About 20 of them are Haulers and Sidewinders. I deposited these back when we didn't have a way to mark a favorite system and station or a way to do ship transfers. These I could obviously get rid of these days. Getting rip of them might net me a total 3 to 5 million credits so it's not on my priority list.

Another 10 of the ships are purely for storage of PowerPlay modules and Engineered modules.

I actually switch back and forth between the other 25-30 ships quite regularly depending on what I am doing and how and where I'd like to do it.

I don't do the module swap thing any more. Swapping the modules and then doing test flights to make sure I got it right takes too much time. It's just easier to jump in a different ship and go.

Tonight, I'm flying my Multi-roll configured 80% engineered Type-10. I really enjoy this ship the way it's configured!

I don't understand. What's wrong with having two Anacondas? How does that make you a "that guy"?

I only have one Anaconda and I rarely use it; I can't imagine wanting two but that's just me and if I did buy a second, why would that be a problem?

I think the "that guy" analogy is one of a hoarder to the point of selfishness. It's like someone who owns 5 houses, rents one of them out, just on the off-chance that he/she might want them --- whilst there are people being driven out of their villages because the houses are now too expensive and empty.

To be clear - I am that guy too. I have a lot of ships. I am not proud.

2 x fully a rated + engineered cutters. one for pvp one for pve - just broke 50,000 bountys claimed. VR is addictive :(

Don't beat yourself up. Efficiency is great, but practicality beats it if you have the resources. I'm still a module-swapper because funds demand it, but I'm sure if I play this game long enough I'll eventually have multiple ships for multiple roles. I'm not even going to think about the meaning of "end-game" until I have a fully Engineered combat Cutter, cargo Cutter and passenger Cutter all sitting next to each other in the shipyard. Or until the servers get switched off, which is the more likely scenario at the rate I'm going.

If you've got the credits, spend 'em. You can't take them with you. Even to another account. ;)

Dunno if this analogy works too well. No matter if I were to own fifty A-rated Corvettes (disclosure: I do not own that many, not by a long shot), the costs of Sidewinders and Asp Explorers aren't going up anytime soon. [big grin]

You are referring to actual (and let's face it: limited) game mechanics. Where I was speaking to the emotion of anyone who "suspends disbelief" and imagines they are a real space pilot in the future.

The fact that the game fails to model inflation, wear & tear, proper supply & demand bar the limited BGS are mere trifles... ;-)

I understand completely, as I only have a Cutter, after selling all my other ships. But, after playing Beta, I’m thinking about getting the Chieftain as my main ship. I continue to dwell on this, as there are still several problems with the IMO.

I have an ASP for exploration and a Conda for Combat, Bulk Passenger, Trading and even mining moduls.
A tiny combat sidewinder for fun and a cobra mk III for smuggeling and USS material pickups.
I will now buy a Chieftain for the need of a medium sized combat ship.
This is all I ever need.

As someone who has 2 anacondas, 2 cutters, various vipers and some other duplicate ships I have forgotten about, it just makes sense to have dedicated builds instead of doing a whole heap of module swapping on a single ship. The outfitting system is rather cumbersome and takes quite a bit of time, especially if your playing around with a lot of modules. So dont worry about it. Multiple ships of the same type make a lot of sense in elite dangerous.

Long ago I just gave up the module swap game after a couple of dumb errors on my part lost me a few nicely upgraded modules. One errant mouse click and too late it's gone.

Now I just build what I want a given ship to do and once I get it where I like it, I park it until I want to use it.

Not much use for more than one Corvette, but other ships lend themselves well to multiple specialized configurations for dedicated uses.

Onece you have module storage maxed out, spare Annies make ideal mobile storage units and also work great as transport vehicles for visiting engineers.

I don't think you can have too many Anacondas...

true! i have 10 of the darn things - as a cash sink. for me the game is more exciting if i'm hovering just above the poverty line. 90% of my ED flying is done in either a Python or Vulture.

I've got one of every ship in the game stored at Jameson Memorial except for a Corvette (I haven't unlocked it yet).

I've also got 3 Pythons, 3 Clippers and a number of FAS and FDL strewn around the bubble, and don't get me started on Haulers as taxis.... :D
You get to a point when you think "I want a ship for trading AND a ship for exploring" and it sort of snowballs from there.
