They're automated, thus they have no driver.

Of course, you're a genius! I've got a doctorate in Spacetrophysics and Star Theory from Oxbridge University, but that never occurred to me. I guess that doctorate is not worth the 50cr I paid for it.

*nodnod* Oh, it is only part of the tangled web they weave. <.< You might assume that they maintain their orbit around their various planets via the use of station-keeping thrusters to minutely adjust their course when needed, but I ask you, HAVE YOU EVER SEEN A THRUSTER FIRE ON THOSE THINGS? The answer is, clearly, no, (and if you actually went to check and found the answer is yes, you're a stinky butt liar and I won't listen.) But then you must ask yourself, what then do the stations use to maintain their orbit? ...what DO stations fire, if not thrusters?
That's right, my children. The reason the stations keep opening fire on random ships is that it's their equivalent of a course correction.

You see, once you stop thinking about the universe with anything resembling reason, logic, or consistency, forgo sleep, and instead subject yourself to Saturday morning cartoons for fifteen straight hours, the true mysteries of the universe will be unlocked to you as well! Oh, but that isn't a boring job at all! In fact it is extremely versatile: You can go one way, or you can go the other! And the best thing is: If you go one way you've got twice the gravity, and if you go the other it's zero gravity. It's like getting paid for driving a rollercoaster. When I'm fed up with exploration I'll apply for becoming a truck driver, for sure!
They're incomplete with the motorway on stations. You should be able to go long ways on those roads too. So far they only animate the trucks going round and round.
