Well that went badly ! (Thargoid tissue harvesting advice)

Hi
I decided to do ram tahs 2nd mission whilst I have a long weekend free from today... However has collecting the tissue from ships been made harder?

I watched a guide at Electra 6 and I thought I followed it, stare head on, fire off limpet, as soon as scan starts boost past go silent then wait using heat sinks

This works for the 1st tissue sample but all times I have gone for the second the thargoid has gone hostile. Twice I died and once I got away with 15%

I don't have any engineering at all on my DBX. I am thinking plan b may be to forget silent running and engineer a cool running ship .

Any tips which may be relevant to any recent updates appreciated ( and if anyone is done with their 3 samples I am happy to pay in commodities for them. It is fun however if I want to do the mission this weekend I don't think I have time to toughen up my ship as well)

PS as is was blowing up the 1st time I remembered I had not sold the exploration data from ram fab mission 1 and I also lost my guardian artificts..... Balls!

Thanks

What distance do you keep? Unfortunately I can't say for sure if it's harder now, since I haven't tried in quite some time.

But yeah, it's definitely a good idea to get all the Thargoid stuff first and don't forget to fit one of those 16t CRCRs.

If it doesn't work out for you, write me a PM. You can have my stuff, I'll probably be able to play on Friday or Saturday.

Hi about 1km or so. I will give it another go. Thanks for the offer I will keep it in mind :)

My other option is to try my FGS and hire a disposible NPC and try to forcibly take it

1km might be too close. It's quite some time since I gathered the tissue samples, so maybe I'm not remembering everything correctly.

But I think I didn't use silent running at all. I just made sure my Asp was quite cool - I think 20-25% heat and I kept as much distance as possible. Might have even been up to 4km.

Limpets will explode past around 2km. I used cold DBX at 18%, stay > 1km. Expect to die a few times when learning. Ideally find a location such that the Thargoid will move away from you when the scan fails.

https://canonn.science/codex/thargoid-tissue-sampling-techniques/ if you haven't seen it already.

Also - does the Electra ship have enough cargo to keep the Thargoid busy? If not it will be very annoying trying to get the samples as they often fail to return a sample.

gl!

I have a specially built and engineered cold running Cobra MK IV (though a Mk III works as well) that I use for this that can stay in silent running for days. The reason for this is that that I have noticed that the use of heat sinks generally backfires. If the Thargoid notices the deployed heat sink (and they usually do) while scanning any cargo in the instance, it will come to investigate. If it does, silent running won't save you. I also make sure to stick just under 5 KM's distant to give myself some maneuvering room closing to 2 KM's when the sample is about to finish.

I don't have any samples at the moment, but I can get them quickly enough. Though I am in UTC-10, so the timing may not work out so well.

Edit: In response to Factabulous' comment, the research limpets have to be deployed within 2 KM of their target, but once deployed they won't self-destruct until you reach 5 KM. Though in terms of retrieving the sample, closing to 2 KM prior to the limpets return seems to help (but I haven't found it to be strictly necessary).

Thanks guys. I have had a think I am going to stick with it and do it myself. I shall take the advice above :)
I may do a bit of engineering. Tbh I needed a use for my cobra IV :)

Thanks

Cool - I recently built a new cold FDS and wanted to try it out - gathered all 3 samples in the usual way from the Banner in Pleiades Sector IR-W d1-55 in about 30 minutes (usually takes longer, and I have done it a few times before :) ). If you do give up let me know - I also have TL but you would probably want to find the TP / TS before taking the samples as pirates really like Thargoid goodies!

Edit: Ah, found a TP as well, you would just need a TS - they're easy ;)

Edit: Limpets have a range of 2km for targeting - and they explode if you get a bit further away . I was boosting past to 2-3km away then approaching and staying around 1.8-2km away while the sampling took place. Must say, the ability to run 3 samplers on the FDS was great, got a tissue sample of each first time, which I don't think I've managed before.

Hang on you are saying there are 3 thargoid ships at the banner class ship above?

Thanks

I ended up using my corvette for the tissue harvest bit...

Took a beating from the medusa though before the limpet returned...

Then noticed I forgot the cargo rack on my AspX ...... [sad]

Funny thing, I have been fighting thargoids (interceptors even) for some time now but never went to get a sample.

I have no advice.
