Were ED's flight controls always this good?

I use the inverted Pitch and Roll mouse setup with a small deadzone.

Is that relative or absolute? How do you find the handling differs between FAON and FAOFF?

The rest of it really is, as you say, down to how you map your keys, which is mainly personal preference about location and clustering.

Even though I backed SC long before I backed Elite.. and backed SC long before many people in SC did... I cant count the number of times I have been told by close minded bigots to "Go back to Elite". when I try to encourage SC to up their flight mechanics .

still cant for the life of me understand why anyone.. on EITHER side could hate a game that does nothing but give us a SECOND fantastic Space sim.

its not like we have been without a great space sim for a decade , or some such stuff as that.

Learnin'? Ain't nobody got time fo' dat! Ah jus' wunt tew click awn da tv an' see da bad gahs splode. If'n Ah haf tew learn tew flah lahk uh pielut den how iz dat fun? Ah ain't gon' git mah munny's wurf. It's uh gaem nawt skoo.

Man, that was painful to type. :)

so the 1:1 mouse possible?
no forced acceleration?
no forced smoothing?
no negative acceleration ?

:eek::cool:

That would make mouse users superior in every way to joystick users. It broke playing with a joystick in Warthunder (unless in simulator mode) I would hate for them to do that in ED too. Mike seems to know what's he's doing though, so I have full confidence they'll do it right.

Hang on a minute, mouse controls are no way near decent at the moment and I have some plans to improve them but it just hasn't been given the time yet to do so. I'm amazed that people can be as effective as they have been with them but there is still much to do yet.

PRAISE JEBUS! I cannot wait for this game, it genuinely looks terrific, but the mouse controls have left me a little concerned. I had hoped that I would change my tune when playing the game (and I may), but I am really happy to see that there are still improvements to be made.

Mouse control has a somewhat steep initial learning curve, but now I am quite happy with it. I have made suggestions on how mouse could be made easier to get used to, but I don't know if anyone from Frontier has read them:
Improving mouse control

(Although IMHO a thumb trackball is superior to a mouse... and someone else claims it is superior to a joystick!)

I just came from War Thunder which has ridiculous 21st century mouse control v's authentic to the era joystick control. It totally ruins the game if you put both methods in the same battlefield like they do. That's part of the reason why I picked up the ED beta.

There really isn't much wrong with mouse control as it is. I use abs.p+r which is fine for normal FAON flight, but is really awkward for FAOFF. Using rel.p+r is great in FAOFF but needs far too much desk space for FAON. If there could be an option for abs.p+r during FAON and rel.p+r during FAOFF, I think this pilot's life would be extended during combat.
Flight-Assist Off works SO much better with Relative mouse control - I find Absolute to be unplayable with Flight-Assist Off (I end-up zig-zagging all the time). So it is unfortunate that I prefer Absolute for Flight-Assist On. The above suggestion would be ace. (Just make sure it is available for both Pitch/Roll AND Pitch/Yaw fans!)

the general idea of favouring pitch and roll with far slower turn speeds than is typical for every other space game ever was set as soon as I got my hand on the design of this thing.

Was there ever any internal debate regarding what flight model to use?
Specifically, did you experiment with the turrents-in-space model in any build, or was the decision made before the first int main; was written, to go for the Spitfire-in-space model?

On a side note, I love the ED dual flight model btw, the way you've managed to seamlessly cater for those who want a more newtonian model (FA off), to those who love an airplane flight model, as well as those who want to dip their toes in the newtonian by using orthogonal thrust. The flying demos by Isinona are really something that inspires. They so clearly convey that although basic ED flying is easy to get into, there is a path for skills growth once past guardrail flying.

PS. do consider using Isinona's videos to put an end to the internet debate about flight models. These vids would kill most of the criticism that ED gets on the subject in "other forums", and perhaps get the number of backers to swell a bit more.

I'd seriously like to know how you intend to improve mouse controls because I haven't been having any difficulties with them as long as I keep flight assist on.

I may spend a lot more time spinning left and right on my axis than a stick player, but you get used to it and it's an advantage in some situations. :D

FA off with a mouse is impossible though, I've just been doing my best to mimic FA off with the sixth degree throttle controls and been having a moderate degree of success. But then again I haven't gotten serious about tweaking the inputs for FA off because I can see it taking a long and frustrating time to get right, and not having the option of switching back to FA without re-adjusting everything.

Edit: Annnnd I'm talking to a zombie. I'll leave it up to admire my dashing good looks though.
