Western Expedition 3302

Jku2wcw.png
(thanks to Cmdr Qohen Leth)

A post Distance Worlds, informal (no timescale, no fixed places) expedition to the far west side of the galaxy on our way home to the Bubble.

When: Starting at mid/end April

Aims:
  1. Find new POIs to add to the GMP.
  2. Trialterate at least every 250 ish Ly new stars to provide more data for route finders to work with
  3. Organise meetups if we have enough people and within a decent range of each other.

Roster
In no particular order as they say on gameshows. (Please PM me robbyp to be added to this list)

The route
First we cross back over the Abyss from Beagle point. I've shown the Rouceveux Crossing, but if you can achieve it more west then that's better!

Stage 1: The Scutum Centaurus Arm

Move westward along the arm to the end. See map 20 on the Galactic Mapping Project where there is no data at the moment.

Overall Map:

For reference, systems have been identifier to show the route. The aim will be to go as far along this arm as possible.

Stage 1c:

Stage 2:
Try and cross as far as possible westard into the Cygnus Arm. This may be difficult, and backtracking along the previous arm may be needed.

Follow the Cygnus/Outer Arm for long as possible. See Map 08 and map 21 on the Galactic Mapping Project . Detailed maps to come.

Stage 3:
Cross back into the Perseus Arm and head home. See Map 09 on the Galactic Mapping Project .

Im in also. From the very beginning i have considered coming back via the New Outer Arm, if not even more west from there.
But when going back, im not going to follow any kind of timetables, i want relaxing way back home following my own timetable, without needing to worry if i make it to some particular destination in time, instead im taking the journey on my own pace. :)
Still happy to know that im not going alone in there when the time comes. :)

I am definitely coming home via the "western" side of the galaxy after DWE, I've been planning this since day one. So yeah count me in, if I'm going to do some old fashioned slow exploring it might as well be for the greater good!

Post-DW I would like to find a region of space - in my definition the bit in the name before the AA-A A99 coding - and survey the whole thing! If there are 1,000 systems in that bit of space then I have to survey 1,000 systems! It appeals to my OCD nature!

Alternatively, I would like to track one of the "Western" arms back to my home system.

Right now though...I need to get to WP23.

Flying happy

Not sure which side to head after DWE, was thinking east but it I'll see what happens between now and then.

I'll be joining you. The current maps are just too empty at the moment. This is still 'there be dragons' territory :).
Question: I was trying to find coordinates for the Beagle Crossing, but a quick Google and forums search doesn't come up with anything. Is there anybody with some advice out there?

This is an example of a proposed exploration to commence after Distant Worlds. TBD

When: Post Beagle point, starting some time in April

The route:

  1. Cross back over the Abyss from Beagle point.
  2. Move westward across the Abyssal Plain (Map 20 on the Galactic Mapping Project ) where there is no data at the moment.
  3. Move south and into the Upper 1st Quadrant (Map 07 on the Galactic Mapping Project ) where there is no data at the moment.
  4. Explore the Upper 1st Quadrant (Map 07 on the Galactic Mapping Project ) where there is no data at the moment.
  5. Explore the Intermediate 1st Quadrant outer areas (Map 08 on the Galactic Mapping Project ) where there is minimal data at the moment.
  6. Explore the New Outer Arm (Map 21 on the Galactic Mapping Project) whrer there is minimal data at the moment.
  7. Return via the Lower 1st Quadrant (Map 09 on the Galactic Mapping Project ) whrer there is minimal data at the moment.

The aims:
  1. Find new POIs to add to the GMP.
  2. Trialterate at least every 250 ish Ly new stars to provide more data for route finders to work with

This is awesome! :D

With this expedition and the Sag-Car mission those empty and forsaken upper quadrants are gonna get some sweet attention ;)

I'm planning on exploring to the West after Distant Worlds too. But I might not go directly there, I like the idea of joining the Rock Rats in propecting around the permit zones for a bit first. Plus I'm heavily engrossed in code tooling projects.

But if I see others around as I canter west I'll be sure to pop by and say hello :)

Yeah this expedition is not formal, just posting where I'm off to and hopefully some people will be around at various times to meet up with.

We can still put it on EDSM if you need, and have a fairly amount of CMDR following you.
You'll have access to the admin part of your expedition to organize yourself.

@robbyp: would you take the lead for all of us?

May I also suggest that rather than taking Roncevaux crossing, we take CMDR Stullis 'Route 33' https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=238330 ? It's much further west, so it will save us some backtracking. Also, it suits my max jump range (33.4 LYs) much better than Svenno's crossing :).
From there on, we can head west along the Scutum-Centaurus arm.

Here's my current plan for the return trip:

wp 24: Podar: MYEIA THAA ZE-R D4-0
wp 25: Permadesco Zoi: PUWHOI ZO-I D9-4
wp 26: Start of Route 33: SYRIAE THAA PJ-I D9-1
wp 27: Distant View in Blue (Planetary nebula): Pyrie Eurk QX-U e2-0
wp 28: End of Route 33, arriving at the Scutum-Centaurus arm: Cho Thua SF-W b29-0

This has been pretty much also my plan since DWE Day 1. If this could be framed in some loose organization and purpose I would feel quite tempted to join in.

Trilaterations in the north-western sector have been reported to be quite tedious (i.e. many distances needed), mainly due to the small number of close/suitable reference systems. So, I've been preparing to improve that situation since the beginning of DWE. So far I've been able to successfully trilaterate (with much help from fellow CMDRs) a considerable number of systems...
  • A) high above and far below the plane at the X=-20kly line to facilitate trilaterating the Y-coordinates and
  • B) along the outer rim of the N/W sector to facilitate trilaterating the X- and Z-coordinates

With 26Ly jump range, whats the shortest passage to western side of the core? Do I have to return all the way to Roncevaux Crossing or is there earlier point to navigate to denser systems?

Henkka, I fear that we don't know. Only a few CMDRs have documented their crossing: Svenno (long range Anaconda), Stulli (33 LY Asp), Erimus (34 LY Asp), Allitnil (25.6 LY Cobra MkIII Roncevaux), and now OlFart (33.2 LY Aps) are the ones I know.
So staying close to Roncevaux Crossing is your best shot, I think.
