Just a thought that crossed my mind:
In an upcoming 2.x update, we will be able to launch fighters from certain ships. They will be glass-cannons and each time, a solo commander ('solo' as in: not playing in a team) will have to decide: Should I mount the fighter and leave my main ship under AI control, or should I stay in my trusted ship and start the fighter under AI control?
The general opinion in this forum seems to be, that those small fighters will not last long enough to influence the combat's outcome notably. On the other hand I think we all can agree, that human-piloted vessels represent a way higher threat than AI-controlled ships and every opponent will focus his attention mainly on this craft.
Why not use this circumstance to enhance the fighter's usefulness? What, if - no matter which ship would be piloted by the commander - BOTH vessels would be represented as hollow icon on the radar screen? The uncertainty the opponent would have to face might give those little fighters the edge they need to be useful.

Related to this topic, I would recommend that multi-crew spaceships are not marked as such at the info-panel (in contrast to players flying in a wing). Many forum members questioned the usefulness of multiple crew-members in contrast to additional ships in a wing, while the benefit itself usually isn't contested. The surprise of an underrated opponent might grant those high-efficiency-ships an advantage in a combat - especially, as the opponent never can be sure, if he simply faces a skilled/lucky solo enemy or a multi-crew ship.
Never underestimate the devastating impact of uncertainty and doubt in a battle!
