The grindy time is beloved- I can get by-my questions answered in Discords; thanks all.
Inara, Exomastery are my friends.

Yes, I’m using the Exomastery for lists of systems with metal rich/ landable within the 16 ly radius of a selected station. Not inara, not inara, but also inara.
I dont use it to identify the closest or biggest source, as i suspect many are doing. I just use it to identify sourceS, then independently assess for whether they will be good or not.
So what's a "great" area? I have a system with 26 different spots I can build things. My little planetless binary will allow six facilities as well. Feels like plenty to go on with now, since I could just chuck down 4 orbis' and have at it?I don't think there are any tools specifically for colonization, yet at least.
There really aren't great areas in the bubble to colonize. Most of the available star systems that are 15 light years from a civilized system is just a planetless stars.
Once/if people push further out from the bubble, far more interesting areas will open up.
Actually, you have more than that. If build an orbital installation it doesn't occupy a station slot.So what's a "great" area? I have a system with 26 different spots I can build things. Of course, it's not hundreds of planets... but what's the aiming mark here? 200 spots to build? A pretty nebula? ELW for cosmetic value?
Yep, I've definitely gone fishing for systems... I was using spansh to narrow down systems with good amounts of bodies, but I'm finding that's not necessarily a good indicator of number of slots either. My last two are fairly nothing-systems, but have almost 80 slots a piece.I've been building in a Brown Dwarf system with 7 landable bodies (6 atmo) and having around 50 locations for building.
Just 7 snowballs, nothing 'interesting' to others, and a heap of similar systems nearby if I want to experiment more later. (after all, from comments here it appears folk want glitzy neighbourhoods to claim, leaving the 'boring' stuff for folk like me to enjoy)
Needed to use Inara to find some bits I'd never heard of, but otherwise use the best in-game resource there is, flying to likely systems and taking a look - I don't do 'efficient', so having fun is the order of the day.
