Actually ... through other vicarious activities ... I discovered that data points stay active whilst the download is completing. You just have to have started the download before the power goes off

Now I'm sad because I broke off one yesterday because I didn't expect that to happen.

You are not even set for 2 full G5s. 75 MI to get from G1 to G5. However, it’s such a good start that as long as you always grab them when they’re available as a mission reward or you find them in a random data port, they’re unlikely to be a blocker for getting an upgrade, so congrats.
Yeah, at least 25 Manufacturing Instructions for upgrades G3 > G5 - assuming you are starting with a G3 item.
