Newcomer / Intro what a joke..........

spent hours and hours doing missions for the federation ,, doing nicely got up to midshipman but still only neutral ... i finish a mission to retrieve a black box... i am scanned on return to the starport that gave me the mission , am fined 5500 AND am now unfriendly ... ?? one step forward two steps back...... what ?? :(

Prohibited goods are always against the law to the local authorities.

You need to sneak in or be careful what missions you take and only take the more illicit missions from outposts with no authority presence.

Go to Federation space and kill some pirates, that might help get your rank back up.

I've had a Sol permit for ages... Counts for jack... Been doing missions out of Abe Lincoln .... Killed truck loads of pirates .. Most ive got to is neutral midshipman..now I'm offered next to nothing.... . and cant believe all the cmdrs flying around aimless at Sol Nav point ..why ?

I only sussed this out today...only accept illegal/black market missions from outposts with external landing pads, & not those from larger stations where you have to land through the letterbox....as the outposts don't scan you on the way in with the naughtynaughtys!! (I guess you would know they don't scan you when you first land there before you read & accept the new mission??)

If you wanna smuggle things into stations that scan you, you're gonna have to learn to do this!

Fast forward to 8:00.

Otherwise, if it says illegal, find an outpost that won't scan you.

If you are allied to a faction do they still scan you? I'm sure I entered a station where I'm greeted as an ally and there was no scan (wasn't carrying anything illegal as I don't want to lose the good rep with them). Just wondering if this was a one off or a consequence of being in good standing.

I am allied to the alliance and most of its factions at Zaonce ... got wanted and a 200 fine for a friendly fire .... Almost instantly every green friendly allied policeman turned red and was blasting my backside.... I managed to fsd out and pay the fine at an outpost.... was OK again... I mean your rank and reputation count for nothing when you get wanted .... Game falls down here IMO...

I'm surprised you got as far as midshipman without knowing all this stuff..... thats the real joke!

Now what help did you really need in this section of the forum ? I suspect none at all really. .. just a whiner

It really seems kind of undeveloped. I am Warrent Officer but hostile with Federation, and I was when I got the mission from the Feds to become WO.
And: I ran into a USS just now, in which the ship would give me an alternative option for a mission. But the Type-6 was hostile (Fed probably), it fired at me, hit, still gave me the alternative option and when I destroyed it, I got fined for murder... ^^

The key here is simple:

If you pick up illegal goods, don't get caught. Simple, really.

If you bring illegal/stolen goods into a station that's not in an Anarchy-system, hope that you're not scanned because getting scanned WILL result in both a fine (my highest is about 38k credits), and you'll take a bad faction-hit.

Risk vs reward in it's very essence.

Think of it like this: the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing.
Those cops on gate duty don't know and certainly don't care that you're running missions for one of their higher ups. All they see is you carrying something you shouldn't.
Run fast and use silent running as appropriate. Practice getting into the station without them seeing you until you feel confident you can do it all the time, then take these missions.

We could ask what's the point of working to get a high rank / reputation with a faction ? You can buy faction ships but is that all? There appears to be no subtle advantages.... Help from authority , extra weapons etc ..... This needs developing

A hint, if you have to smuggle into a station, or just want to, get a chaff launcher, and if you hear ‘scan detected’ launch your chaff and they won’t be able to scan you. That or just going really fast works for smuggling.

To the OP, it’s not well designed, I agree, but your reputation is well recoverable. Missions, bounty hunting and trading all improve your rep.

When you jump out of super cruise take your time to line up with the docking port from 8.5 k out

Full power to engines, when your close enough to request docking do it.

When you get about 4.5k out hit the boost.

As soon as your through the gate full reverse and deploy landing gear to slow down.

Pray no ones leaving or your gonna die.

These missions clearly state they are covert ops, the activity is illegal and you'll be on your own if you fudge it. If a local cop finds you carrying a pound of coke having an oral agreement with the FBI won't help you either. Regardless, for now ranks are just for RP, there is no real gameplay behind it yet. Don't matter too much to me, I'm happily patrolling Federation space in my Viper, but more fleshed out features would be great.

Smuggling to a station made easy

1. Just line up with the station slot at atound 8km out.
2. Request docking, (you can do that as far as 10km from a station)
3. 2 pips to engines in case you wonder, you can do more if you wish.
4. fly straight in (can be difficult if ships are entering or leaving).
5. drop power as you enter the opening and coast in.

If you fly in from the side of the station, you will get scanned every time. You must fly straight in like the video demonstrates, but you do not need to go 300km/s
You do not need to drop shields and go stealth. I go in at 195km/s in my Asp. Have gone in as slow as 175km/s.

I do this with everything powered and shields up. Sometimes I get the scan warning as I'm entering the slot, but if you get inside quickly, the SA ships can't scan you.
I have never...I repeat, never received a fine. You do not need to genuflect to smuggle goods. Just be a good pilot and get inside without crashing.
Shields will protect you from glancing blows.

That's my 2cr
