Newcomer / Intro what a joke..........

spent hours and hours doing missions for the federation ,, doing nicely got up to midshipman but still only neutral ... i finish a mission to retrieve a black box... i am scanned on return to the starport that gave me the mission , am fined 5500 AND am now unfriendly ... ?? one step forward two steps back...... what ?? :(

Ouch - that's a big fine! More annoying for sure is the loss of rep with the Feds.

I think you are right to question the devs for the way reputation works in this regard, but wrong for questioning others for pointing out that what you were doing was illegal and you were rightly penalised by the authorities. Lesson learned I hope. When you are carrying illegal goods, don't get caught by the authorites.

I don't know for sure about the fed rep missions, but generally, all missions that ask you to fetch illegal goods, clearly put this in their mission statement, telling you that they will deny all involvement etc etc. So you should know that you are doing something illegal. To me, the fact that your fed rep drops when you are scanned by the feds doing a job for those feds is pretty logical. They ask you to do this mission because it has to be off the records. It's a black ops. See it as the NSA asking you to do something that is illegal by law. When you get caught by the FBI, your US rep drops as well because the FBI's role is more in public.

So in short: If you do a clandestine mission, keep is off the records and out of plain sight.

I've had a Sol permit for ages... Counts for jack... Been doing missions out of Abe Lincoln .... Killed truck loads of pirates .. Most ive got to is neutral midshipman..now I'm offered next to nothing.... . and cant believe all the cmdrs flying around aimless at Sol Nav point ..why ?

When I started I dumped an entire hold full of illegal goods outside a federation station entrance, and was fined around 120k, 5500 is peanuts. Reputation and rank gains take effort, and "hours" wont cut it; I am now Allied Ensign, although I no longer receive promotion missions, since I can no longer gain rep with the federation. Run missions out of federation aligned stations to improve rep, aimlessly killing random ai results in minimal increases.

As for sol a lot of folks are interested in working out of Sol and why not, ignoring the fact it is where Earth is located, it is still a decent system to buy upgrades. It was also inevitable there would be hot spots within the game where ppl focus their efforts and hang out, Sol is just one such place.

EDIT, forgot to point out that there are a number of rare variations of weapons that will be reintroduced to the game at some point. They were withdrawn at the end of closed beta. These weapons and components have better characteristics than the base version, some do more damage and iirc bore the tag [overheated], some drain less energy etc, and these will be available from systems like Sol that require permits to access.

I have also heard it said (although I haven't tested this) that if you pop chaff when the scan is initiated they can't complete the scan. So if you aren't confident in your docking abilities you could try that.

If you are allied to a faction do they still scan you? I'm sure I entered a station where I'm greeted as an ally and there was no scan (wasn't carrying anything illegal as I don't want to lose the good rep with them). Just wondering if this was a one off or a consequence of being in good standing.

You were just lucky. I got scanned trying to sneak in after a covert mission, got scanned, fined AND it lowered my reputation with the faction I was doing the mission for!
I think they're saying - If you get caught, you're on your own!
Just done another similar mission and managed to get in without a scan, restored my reputation to where it had been before the previous mission....

I've been keeping an eye on this since I posted. It seems I never get scanned. Only problem is this place is independent and has no black market. I'm an idiot.

agree but what i cant get my head around is by retrieving stolen goods i am gaining reputation with the authority that is seeking to punish me for carrying stolen goods... .. by acting illegally i am gaining rank.... make sense ?? or not ??

When you took the mission you were told that the activity would be considered illegal. You took a smuggling mission and by getting caught you proved yourself untrustworthy. Hence a loss of reputation. Its a covert mission so the station and system authorities wouldn't have been briefed to turn a blind eye to your activities. Moral of the story: Don't take missions you don't have the skills to complete.

Like Jaiotu said, they're probably testing you to see how good you are. You got caught and so failed the test and lost reputation.

Not sure if that is how FD see it, but that would make sense to me :)

no its not always a smuggling mission... sometimes it says this activity is considered illegal sometimes not...its a mission to help us out or a clean up mission etc.. anyway irony is i can get to the top of the federation by breaking its own rules... if all i did was carry stolen goods and was "skilled " enough to dodge scans ...thats my point....

Sounds like security services, politicians or financial sector. As long as you don't get caught you will fly up the ranks. ;)

What Evyl Minkey said. :) Also remember: You are working for a corrupt, corporate controlled regime. Lot's of infighting, federal versus local interests, and all that. It does make sense in the universe's background, that isn't good old Jean-Luc's Federation. (Not saying it was by design, only that it can be explained.)

Oh well, the beautiful freedom of a truly independent system...

FYI in 1.2 you will be able to tell when you have illegal cargo on board very easily. Looks like you will see the Wanted message {or similar}
