What a landing looks like

Planetary landings are for the future. But have a look at this fantastic presentation of the details of the moon landing:

Auto landings on populated planets is one thing. I wonder if it will be possible for ED to capture some of the excitement of landing on a new unpopulated planet for the first time, maybe with some manual control of balancing your ship on its thrusters.

It's facinating to watch and listen to.

One of my greatest ambitions would be to meet one of the remaning apollo 11 astronauts.

there was plenty of manual control when landing off a spaceport in FE2... ;)

Thats great listening to that again. So calm, so professional, so cool, so awesome.

Of course they were cool and calm, they were all professional actors reading from a script!

Interesting stuff.

Here's something that just occurred to me - something to throw at the conspiracy theory people: in all the military films I've seen, even though there's a lot of military jargon, you can basically understand what's going on. With this, a lot of it is Greek to me, which indicates it isn't some specially written script - no script is as confusing as this (and I know a lot of military jargon).

Secondly - if it was a conspiracy, why did they keep going back? The whole point was to beat the Soviets to the moon. Job done - why keep going back, unless it's for real?

Was anyone here actually around back then to hear all this live? That must have been something.

Ahh ... that's a brilliant breakdown of the landing. Thank you for that link Rob. It's a true example of what humanity can do when it puts its mind to something. Lets hope we one day have a HD stereoscopic 3d version of the same thing happening on Mars in our lifetimes.

It's all been rather disappointing since then hasn't it? We were supposed to be on Mars by now... :(

Well duh, they already had the set. You know cheap sequels are moneyspinners. :D

I think the biggest evidence for it not being a conspiracy is that the USSR didn't contest it.

I sometimes think that, but then I remind myself that we've got a solar system teeming with automated probes of various levels of sophistication generating unprecedented amounts of data, a permanently-manned space station and a growing number of commercial spacecraft both suborbital and orbital either in operation or very close.

If the Cold War hadn't ended and the space race had continued we might have had more impressive hardware up there by now, maybe even a moon base. But it would all be controlled by governments, or at best by military-industrial groups working on behalf of governments.

The journey of manned spaceflight may have suffered a hiccup of a few decades (and the loss of the shuttle program with no viable replacement was a tragedy) but it looks as though it will be a combination of commercial interests and entrepreneurial wanderlust that drives the next phase.

I think that's quite exciting.

Going back to the Mythbuster's Moon Landing programme for a second, it's being broadcast in the UK on Quest on Monday at 8pm for those who haven't seen it, like me.
