What about Horizons 4.0 "files" when one upgrades to Odyssey?

Greetings,

My question might be stupid but, thanks to Horizons 4.0 I was able to make sure that my rig can run the game with acceptable FPS/quality, which I wasn't sure of when I first looked at the Odyssey system requirements.

Now, what I would like to know is, if I upgrade to Odyssey, will I have to download it, or will it use Horizons 4.0 files?
In case it doesn't, since I will no longer see "Horizons 4.0" in the launcher, now displaying "Odyssey", how should I delete the Horizons 4.0 files?
I'm asking because if it doesn't use Horizons 4.0 assets, and I have no means to now delete said assets, it would take up disk space for a "ghost" game.

Thank you !

Horizons 4.0 is using the same game files as Odyssey would, apart from the player settings like controls & graphics settings it's completely separate from the 3.8 & base game game files.

You might need to download some changes if you get Odyssey but it probably won't be much.

If you are happy to stay with 4.0 (or Odyssey) and feel you won't need 3.8 & the base game any more you can uninstall 3.8 from the launcher to save some space on your hdd if you want. You can reinstall anytime if you change your mind.

You don't need 3.8 installed to get out of those situations. 4.0 has Horizons and base game modes built in. Just launch it with SeasonTwo or SeasonOne arguments.
I'm not sure we are "allowed" to do that. I've seen somebody claim they they got a forum ban for a post explaining how to do that. (They did get the ban, but I can't know if that was really the reason)

I saw that post before it was deleted. It contained a verbal attack on a CM.

I don't see how Frontier could legally stop you from launching EDH4 if you own both the Horizons season pass and the Odyssey DLC which was advertised to be EDH4 compatible by autumn 2021.

Okay, makes sense. I suspected that wasn't the whole truth.

Thank you! Quite surprised nobody from Frontier can confirm though. I'm also surprised it wasn't more explicit as well, since having people buy Odyssey and upgrade from Horizons 4.0 is the whole point. I guess I'm the only one with such worries.

So, I don't why, but that did not went as smoothly for me. Maybe because I'm on Steam? Anyway, Steam started to download 50 G, so I stopped and tried through the launcher, which did the same as steam. So I closed the launcher and left Steam to it's doings, he downloaded Odyssey (again because I still have Horizons 4.0). My folder is now 120 G, 20 base game + 50 H 4.0 + 50 Ody.
Great.
Anyway, do anyone know which file I should back up before uninstalling? (and downloading 70 G for the thrice time)
Thank you.

I would suggest to go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Elite Dangerous\Products (if you use the default install path) and delete each subfolder inside except elite-dangerous-64 and elite-dangerous-odyssey-64. Then let Steam verify/repair the installation. This should bring your install size down to the normal size of 70 GB without redownloading large amounts of data.

elite-dangerous-64 and elite-dangerous-odyssey-64.

"Fun" fact about that: I don't have these folders under Steam or better said, they are named totally different. More like "ED 1010... (somewhat)..."
(Sorry, I'm at the office and can't verify the exact names right now...)

Maybe a relict from former times and the change from the "season" to the "DLC"-type expansion thingy. Or it's related to an early installation of E: D through Steam that is using the "generic" FD launcher with generic log in. At least I can logout from the launcher and log in to my two (Frontierstore) alt commanders.

My later "T-9 tanker" accounts need another launcher with Steam log in from their respective Steam account an don''t accept any other login afaik.
