What about tractor beams?

Dont tell me the someone tried to pull the realism crap again...

Well realism or not, but mining definitely needs something to pull them ers in (don't know if you get the reference here :D). If there will be something like that, hell, they may not even need to increase prices or something...

I still say, and will keep saying, that a form of drone that uses a Utility slot to dock to would be the best solution. They'd be triggered to go play fetch though weapons groups. It'd even scale easily with ship sizes, the more slots, the faster you can mine.

Yeah, seems logical. Utility slots are useless for mining anyway...

I like the Drones Ideas, the tractor beam doesnt really fit the game - I would like to use drones but they would need to have a max range/fuel/weight limits etc. - You would also need to individually target each piece of cargo/mineral to launch the drone (think targeting cargo hatch and launching limpet) - Whether or not a drone can pick up multiple pieces or just one at a time, Im either way on that. Drones would need to be able to be shot down (just like limpets: point defense etc.) - Minimum speed while drone is in use, cargo scoop open etc. <- these were all ideas from others that I agree with - none of them are original

All in all what people who are against it fail to realize is that it REALLY isnt feasible to mine in the larger ships - I dont think Ive ever seen a conda, python, type 7, type 9 scooping for hours on end....maneuvering one of those beasts in an asteroid field would suck.

Cargo scooping doesnt really take much skill...its just extremely time consuming. And add to that its not very profitable compared to the other types of income. Could anyone really imagine trying to max cap a type 9 with mining alone? Or how about this idea, make the Drones module be a minimum class...class 4 or 3 or something - so if you want to be a dedicated miner from the start, youd have to scoop until you get enough for bigger ships.

EDIT: - And along that note of requiring an internal module for the Drones...Make the internal slot a "drone housing" or something - but also REQUIRE a utility slot to control the drones. You already require a mining laser, and cargo space to use a refinery (duh) why not make it the same principle - you have a drone housing or drone plant for the internal slot, and then you have drone control for the utility slot - each utility slot (grade dependent) can control x number of drones, so fully kitted mining vessels would have 2 mining lasers( or whatever) 2-4 drone controls in utility, and then x number of internal slots for the drone housing along with the refinery and cargo space - it would require a serious amount of investment, and as long as you have the restrictions on the drones themselves and what they can do, this would add some depth to a mining role

All I know is there are plenty of "assisted" systems for all the other types of gameplay (gimball/turret = combat, autodocking = trading/combat/anything, Trade calculators and overlays (which I use) = trading, not really much for exploring that I know of but I havent done it yet....) but anyways - the point im trying to make is that would it really hurt mining to add drones? If you really think so, would it be that big of a deal for you not to use the drones and give it to people?

Idk, I think this comes down to the fact that spending all that time scooping makes mining not worth it because of the profits not being anywhere close to what trading and combat are, I think exploration even got a boost as well....

Tractor beams in 5 years maybe?

The problem with tractor beams is that there are several types: Electromagnetic, optical/thermal, optical cork screw(created in real life as shown here:https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=gR7VIFmMv24). All options are slow and require a lot of power and would hard to focus especially with electromagnetism..it would send the asteroid flying your way. Maybe one day in the future, when the game has little left to release, but for now, drones are fast, epic and realistic.

what is needed is EVE type drones that you can deploy to help you mine and fight. Same mechanics where you could leave them behind and have someone grab them then sell them
Tractor beams would then have to also be usable in combat which may create more problems

Who cares about tractor beams? They could add a harpoon or grappling hook that would work just as good. In fact they could have a a whole system that could include detachable heads for a harpoon that pierces targets, a multi-pronged grappling hook that grabs targets, an adhesive head that sticks to targets, and a magnetic head that grabs metal objects. Or possibly combine all 4 features into a single all-in-one tool? They could be launched using a grappler weapon on a 400 meter wire that reels stuff back in. Plus this is stuff we could make with our technology today.

I had pictured the interdiction tethers as basically tractor beams. Thats not the case? I just assumed it was some kind of physical connection that could be evaded or broken with maneuvering.
