Unfortunately the videos are either misleading or indicative of earlier builds. The graphics have been downscaled as builds have progressed. As to the reasons why, well, there is as always lots of forum speculation with very little feedback from Frontier Developments.

Good monitor and setting to ULTRA is nothing without a good GPU, I noticed you didn't mention any of that. For comparison here is what the game looks for me and a quad i7 with GTX980 Titan

But seriously, what kind of GPU are you running?

With whatever response we have answering why the graphics have been lowered and if they will put them back to where they were, let us take a moment to read the psychological flowchart below after reading their responses:

I think that is quite misleading and unfair.
My visuals are really great.

I do agree that some things could be improved, but the game certainly does not look like crap.
These are some very recent screenies.

I downsized them for the upload.
I do not use graphics mods.

i have an i75820k 3,30ghz, 16gb ddr4 3200, geforce gtx 970 4gb oc.... i think is more than i need for ed
That should be plenty. You'll to post some screen shots as examples,a s I have seen perfectly fine graphics on much lesser machines. I will add to make sure your GPU drivers are up to date

I find that it all depends on the lighting from the star. I have a r9 390 and get 60fps on planet surfaces on ultra. Some systems are beautiful others are not so. I've only just left the bubble after 9 months of play. I've spent the last 30 odd hours of game time marvelling at the lighting and textures on the planets. Those textures with lighting within a nebulae are a rare treat.

Remember when Watch_Dogz had the hidden settings that they used in the launch 'gameplay' video that they then locked down for the production release? Probably the same thing.

I think V-Sync on. Could you please try to V-Sync off?
with v-sync off the fps go crazy, ill try it

edit. v-sync off, i think is worse

I do not like how lighting degrade, how to get rid of it, i kinda want a smooth one
bad english, sry

I used to have supersampling on and AA off, when I was playing with 1080p monitor and 970. I liked it a lot. It made everything so nice and sharp unlike those blurry AAs.
Now with new 1440p monitor I had to drop supersampling. :(
