Newcomer / Intro What am I looking at?

Here I am again to pick yer brains.
I'm planning out a bunch of engineering. Using Coriolis loadouts as a guide. Much of what I'm seeing, I grasp.
Buuut I'm getting lost. I understand the engineering types I'm seeing. But below that (see highlights in red) I'm clueless what this is telling me.
Same ship, same cannon types. Same engineering but there's some different caveats between em that I don't understand.

The differences are down to the different experimental effects selected which not only add the advantages described but inevitably also have their own consequences.

Thermal Cascade
Experimental munitions that interact with shields upon detonation, generating significant heat on the target.

High Yield Shell
Modified munitions that convert a portion of damage to explosive, capable of hitting multiple internal modules if the attack breaches the hull, at the cost of a reduced fire rate.

Experimentals can only be added at an engineers base that carries the blueprint in question, they can be so useful in some cases that people only engineer the module to apply the experimental effect
