Newcomer / Intro What am I missing about faction progression?

So I want to get enough federation standing to be able to travel to Sol. I have been doing Federation missions, at least I think so. I am accepting missions with the solar system icon which I believe is the symbol of the Federation. Only problem is is when I successfully complete a Federation mission, I gain faction standing with the minor faction but lose in Fed standing. How can this be even though it appears to be a Federation mission?

What you need to do is look in the right hand panel see if your progression with the federation XX% isn't rising when you complete a couple of mission... when this % number hits 100% you'll get a Ranking mission and once that is completed the counter% will be reset to 0% or maybe a few % if you did some more missions before doing the ranking missions....

don't worry about your standing with the federation as this will go back up and down based on you doing missions for the federation in a federation system or you do missions for the federation in a system belonging to either the impire or alliance or even an indepentent system

To put it another way, major faction reputation and naval rank progress are related, but not the same. You can lose major faction reputation if you don't contribute to it for a while, but you can't lose naval rank progression. The progress bar with the % is the naval rank progression, and that's the one you have to worry about if you're looking to access Sol.

Thanks everyone. I have another question. I got another mission to bring back stolen consumer goods. Do I literally just fly around looking for unknown signal sources hoping to find the right one? It does not give a specific system.

Yes, if it has to be stolen, then it's exactly what you need to do.

The game is trying to help you, though. If you find a trader there, there is a good chance they will haul what you need. :)

If you're not happy about pirating, you can try salvageable wreckages. Often you find cargo floating around, there, that also counts as stolen. ;)

You can also have a friend hook you up! Just have them purchase the item you need and drop it so that it is illegal!

When looking for said goods, is it relatively common to wait 20 minutes or so before finding the right signals? I tried for like an hour last night and found 3 of the 5 stolen goods I needed before giving up.

If you have trouble looking for USS/SW, just slow down to 30km/s and fly in the straight line.
They will appear close enough to your ship that you can drop into them right away. That can save immense amount of time, compared to standard approach procedure.
But yes, sometimes you have to inspect dozens of them before you get lucky.
