English is not my mother tongue, but the word federal - I always thought - hinted at something official. even if they didnt have the police tag / wordings in the rest of their name / description.

Well, until today when I dropped out of Supercruise and a "Federal Dropship" just opened fire at me. I was not wanted, it was not wanted either, even after it attacked me (maybe I was in an anarchy system). but why did it open fire on me? I am green with the federation, and neutral with the other ones. I have no enemies... it was an NPC by the way. He didnt talk much, just that he kills me sth. brabble.

Dropships are ships, the same as any other ship you can buy and see in the galaxy. Depending o n where you are, Imperial Clippers and Federal Dropships are quite rare

'Federal Dropship' is the name of the hull, like the equivalent 'Imperial Clipper' or 'Cobra Mk III' or 'Sidewinder'. Many pirates and smugglers own federal dropships.

The Federation Dropship is a type of ship. It's only available to buy if you have high enough military rank with the Federation, much like the Imperial Clipper is only available to those with high enough military rank with the Empire.

Federal and Imperial is just the major faction (Federation or Empire).
They have some exclusive technologies and designs.

Think of US American made F 16 vs. Russian Mig 29.
They are not excusive to those countries or their Armys.
So Japan Flys F16s, like the Turkish Army aswell. And others like some Eastern States Fly Migs.
And if something goes wrong Taliban have Stinger Missiles and terrorists fly Migs.
And this is most likley what you came across, a Pirate in an federal Dropship. :)
