What are some guidelines for giving away used PC games?

I've been donating stuff to a thrift store but I've held off on donating my used PC games. I don't want to donate something if it won't work if someone buys it from them.

What are guidelines for donating used PC games? (Obviously, I won't donate something that requires Steam or "Games for Windows" activation). Should I avoid donating anything that requires a CD key?

No store accepts used PC games. Anything older than Steam won't work on modern PCs, because their DRM (SecuROM, Starforce etc.) won't install. Anything newer won't activate, because you used the one-time code.

There might be a few rare exceptions in your collection, but that's the rule.
